Get into settings and set them to your liking. There is a section on dealing with read vs unread.

Just talking about the green app here:
As Scott said, you can go into settings and do some changing. I'm using Android, so the Iphone app may may be different.
On Android, the unread threads have a green vertical bar to the left of the thread subtopic, and also the thread title in a subtopic, if there are unread posts there.
I also have my settings to also grey out the read threads, in conjunction with the missing green bar.
Let me edit this with some screenshots. Here you can see the green vertical bar indicating unread posts in the subtopics (Forest River FAQ's has no new posts and thus no bar). In the bottom screenshot, you can see the vertical green bar in front of the first thread indicating unread posts, while the second thread (titled "new here") is greyed out (and no green bar) indicating it has been read and thus no new posts to it.
Maybe someone with the Iphone app can help more.

Something I just did run into, while loading the screenshots that I haven't encountered before in uploading the screenshots. When trying to upload them using the photo icon, as I have done many times before..I got a no permission error message. However when I used just the attachment icon, it uploaded them and inserted the proper IMG tags.
I'm going to look into that more.

Has anyone else noticed all the dang pop up ads we now have???? I totally dislike them and am confused as to why they are suddenly necessary after all these years we've not had them.... Does someone now pay someone else to get their dang ad placed in the threads so they totally are "in your face" ????

The ads are what make membership free and pays for server space, software upgrades and what ever else is needed to keep it up and working.
Adblock is used to keep them unseen.

Unfortunately, they end up costing me money when I use my cell data. host file blocking is the way to go and it's free.

Would you rather have to pay a membership fee? Ads are no big deal, easy to block them or ignore them.

You are recommending blocking the ads or ignoring them visually. I recommend having your computer ignore them locally without added software running. I get the added benefit of pages loading faster.
How is your "block them" method keeping me from paying a membership fee?

Guess I'm dense, I don't see the point you are trying to to make. All I'm saying is ads are a necessary evil to keep free sites free. How you deal with them, or block them, is up to you. Actually, I don't even think I was replying to you, I just forgot to quote the original. I just don't get folks who complain about trivial things in a free site.

Ha, no judgement here. I was also responding to others, earlier. I thought you responded directly to my post. I am just asking you a question responding to this statement.

You implied a membership fee would be charged if ads did not exist, but then offered blocking the ads as an option.
IMO, whether ads are trivial is personal preference. And, people have been known to complain about things. . .

So the forum puts stickies for most threads now. Then makes the adds to look similar. Pretty good marketing if you ask me. Rather we like it doesn't really matter I guess.
