Re-posting "Question".
There was a thread that discussed, among other things, that libel would not be tolerated. My question before the thread was closed was "How do the folks here determine libel?" I didn't get an answer but I am still wondering.

Libel is the written or broadcast form of defamation, distinguished from slander, which is oral defamation. It is a tort (civil wrong) making the person or entity (like a newspaper, magazine or political organization) open to a lawsuit for damages by the person who can prove the statement about him/her was a lie.
Forest River Forums is not a court of law, nor do we attempt to be. This is a campers, camping, and camping related forum.
What the site team does is use common sense along with judgment calls (a lot of which is based off of past experiences) in determining what can be construed as libel postings from the members here. It's not really that hard, and usually can be seen when using the above definition as a guideline.
Since we are not the legal system, we will usually err on the side of caution when encountering potentially libel postings, as it's not really within our capabilities to know if a member is posting lies about another person or entity. The best way is to make sure we don't allow someone to put us in a libelous situation....and also part of the reason for this guideline:
Dealer/Vendor and Customer Disputes: This forum is not intended to be a mechanism for people to vent frustrations about vendors or sales from private parties. Please settle your differences with sellers, manufacturers and dealers through the long-established legal or arbitration systems or the Better Business Bureau but not through our community.

In a forum such as this I don't understand why this topic was brought up. The Idea of this forum is not to bad mouth others but to share information that could help each other. As to libel everyone has opinions some good some bad and most people should keep there bad ones to themselves. Lets just keep the forum the way it's meant to be used as a way to share ideas, helpful information a way to have direct access to the manufacturer. One of the major reasons for coming to this site was learning another was getting the feel of camping year round by helping other campers get the most out of the experience.

Just make sure that you and others know that this forum isn't affiliated with the manufacturers. There are a couple for reps that frequent the site, but it is generally on their own accord.
And sadly, over the years- we've lost more active reps than we have gained.

I do understand that but it does get some direct access to them as to information exchange between the owners and manufacturer.

I fully.. no FULLY understand the definition of libel if anyone here does
The definition here is not a complete definition by any stretch of the imagination. By claiming a certain post is libelous you are opening yourself to a claim of written defamation (the actual meaning of libel). It would be best to simply delete the post with no further discussion as to why. Your second to the last paragraph makes it perfectly clear why.
Otherwise, I enjoy the forum.
