Tired of the pictures you post being sideways? Here's a trick!

Most of the pictures we upload are taken with a cellphone. If the photo is taken as a portrait (phone vertical) then uploaded, the site will present it in landscape mode, which of course is sideways. There's a pretty easy work-around for this:
First the picture will have to be uploaded to a Windows computer. After that open the file with Paint, rotate the picture 90 degrees clockwise, then 90 degrees counter-clockwise, then save. Upload that picture to the forum and it will stay vertically oriented.
Don't ask me how it works, but it does. The simplest plan is to always take the pictures meant for posting in landscape mode, but if you have one that insists on posting sideways this trick should correct it.

For Apple users

And for us Apple users this is what I do.

Take the pic with my IPhone and via the cloud the pic automatically transfers to my Ipad. Open the pic with the Ipad and select edit. After the pic downloads select the rotate icon. Rotate 90 degrees and select done. Select edit a second time and select rotate again. Rotate the pic another 270 degrees to the original orientation and select done.

Then when you add the pic via manage attachments on the website it will display properly.

Not sure if you could just rotate it 360 degrees with just one edit but that doesn’t seem to work for me. I know, a pain in the rear but it will work.

I take a pic with my iPhone then send it to the macbook pro upload to pictures and then drag on to the desktop to upload to FRF to get them to upload with the correct orientation

Or, and hear me out. Social Knowledge (who own the forum) could fix this years old issue and not make us jump thru hoops.

I mean, clearly they’re tweaking the site and making changes because they’ve added ads; why not fix an annoying bug while they’re at it?

Or maybe that's too logical. [emoji1787][emoji1787][emoji1787]

I take pics with my iPhone and use the Tapatalk app to post them here. Tapatalk has never mis-oriented a single pic. Since I often use Tapatalk, I don’t consider that jumping through hoops.

I don’t have Tapatalk on my phone and shouldn’t need it for photos to upload properly using Safari or Chrome. This is completely a fixable and often reported issue.

Wouldn't it be easier to just take pidtures in landscape

Or better yet throw away the I Phone?

I’ve tried photos in all orientations and have had issues no matter how I turn it. And moreso, there’s no consistency for when it does and doesn’t rotate them.

Before uploading pictures here I usually open them in Photoshop so I can adjust the cropping, exposure, white balance and red eye. Then I set the image density and save as. It usually takes only a couple of hours to get the picture exactly the way I want it to display...oh wait this isn't 04/01 yet never mind..

Or, since it's a picture, use a camera. Phones are for talking.

My experience, too. Always come out sideways whether posted in landscape or portrait. But I haven't tried the rotate clockwise then counter clockwise trick so will do that next time.

There are phones out today that take better quality pictures than most cheap cameras. Unless you want to spend a couple hundred dollars on a camera.

Even then, with the phone you can take a pic and upload it here to the forum on the same device. Nice if you are just taking a quick pic of some problem that you have and don't plan on actually keeping the picture.

I can't access FRF on any camera that I know of.

Wink Photo orientation

For Apple,

I use Apple products. This can be done on any Apple phone, iPad or computer. There can be slight differences between devices and versions of the Operating System (OS).

Open the photo.
Click Edit.
Tap on the cropping icon.
Tap on rectangle with the curved arrow in it or around it.
Rotate the photo by tapping the rotate box 4 times.
Click done.

Post the photo and all will be correct orientation.

Now you can smile smugly knowing you use a superior device.

How hard could it possibly be to be able to preview attachments on this website and have basic editing capability? (rotate, or crop). I normally take landscape oriented pics with my iPhone, and actually get annoyed when I see people using their camera phone in portrait mode when landscape would actually be more suitable, because it exudes ignorance. Unless portrait is the desired effect.

But until this change is made (probably never), I will jump through the appropriate hoops. Or more likely just post sideways pics and make everyone tilt their heads.

I just use the ProCamera app. Much better than Apple app. Never a problem with rotation.

OK> I'm putting this theory to the test because I have posted a few pics taken from my cell in the past and even after going to my photo editing pgm to rotate the pic, it still came out rotated on this site.

I'm posting a picture taken with my camera now, not phone and let's see how it turns out:

WOW! I made no adjustments to this cardinal.

Thank you all for the responses, but the point of my original post is that if you do happen to upload a picture that shows up sideways in the preview of a submission, this trick should correct it.

LOL! You mean my phone is something I can use as a phone? I'll have to try that.

Just wanted to say this works great! Thanks for the tip. This issue has been a frustration for a while but I had not found an answer. I tested on my iPhone 8 with a pic I took today and had previously forwarded sideways. Under the same conditions, this method resulted in a correctly oriented picture. I still don't understand why something so simple isn't automatically corrected but am grateful for the easy workaround.
