Crock Pot Cooking while traveling

I am a bit stumped... I read somewhere (on line, naturally) that you can have a crockpot pluggin in and cooking dinner as you travel down the road. We are in a FW.... just wonder..... has anyone heard this/done this???? is it safe? I have put a crock pot in the sink..... after cooking it at home for a short ride to a campground..... and it has stayed hot. Just wondering HOW you would secure it???

You can't use a crockpot in a 5er going down the road unless you have a generator or inverter to furnish 110 volts or unless you have a 12v crockpot. If you have a generator or a 12 volt model, I would put it in a large metal pan to take care of spills and use museum putty to hold the pan and the crockpot. I just wouldn't do it regardless.

Good question Earth Station! Hmmmmm....we use the genny when we are traveling......I bet if you have the crock pot securely sitting in the sink, and your crock pot is not full to the top, you could do it! It's not like the crock pot is going to jump out of the sink, and as long as it is sitting so it doesn't slide around in the sink, it might actually work! It actually sounds like a good idea....travel and have a great meal when you are done! (Of course I am a PPST/C member and we are known to try some crazy things!)

If you’re going to try this you better know there aren’t any rough roads ahead. You might want to secure the lid to the crockpot also. Depending on the type and style of sink you put the crockpot in expect some dents or damage if you encounter rough roads. On the other hand, if you’re just driving to a local campground and you know the roads are smooth then I say go for. Be sure to come back and let us know how that worked out for ya.

Plus you should have a stainless steel sink. Wouldn't think of it in one of the non-metal ones. Not a very good idea even in my feeble mind.

I have that movie!! Our new rig has the really deep sink, but it is wide, so the crock pot would have to be secured so it doesn't slide around......

How about securing it with some of those spring-loaded bars we use in the fridge or medicine cabinet while under way? Just like a cargo bar in the back of a pickup. Pin it against one side of the sink.

Also, we have a crock pot that came with an insulated carrying case. Coming with it was a silicone (like bakeware) band that can be used to secure the lid.

I put mine on the floor of back seat of truck n run the cord out the door to gennie . "Snacks" while traveling .

I haven't tried this myself, but when my brother does it he uses the built in inverter in his TV and has it in there.

My Mother does this, but my Dad had to put a 12 volt plug in the motor home. She made hotdogs in beer

. Good waste of beer or good waste of hotdogs?????

anyways I would only do it in a motorhome where you can keep an eye on it..

anyways I would only do it in a motorhome where you can keep an eye on it..

I prefer to use the beer to help swallow the hot dogs.

thanks everyone..... I just wasn't sure. I make a crock pot dinner when we are going local after work. unplug it at home .... wrap in a beach towel and put in the sink.... it isn't a big crock pot but it will feed us.......

SWMBO's family has reunion - in PA every other year. she's done the "crockpot in the sink" routine often, without problems. Of course, it's Interstate highway most of the way, and 8 hour trip is enough time to cook 'til it's done. We've since downsized this year and don't have the inverter, so that's probably a thing of the past. But it worked well. If you're going to be on highways, go for it!
