Lyme Disease News

Study shows things aren't getting any better on the Lyme disease front.

Better stock up on the insect repellant.

And protecting pets is a way of keeping pets from bringing ticks into the house and/or camper. Protecting them protects you. Not to mention most collars and sprays that repel ticks also repel fleas.

Here's a thread about my favorite tick removal tool.

I have had good luck using hand sanitizer to remove ticks (I always have it with me camping). Cover the tick and let it set 2-3 minutes, they back out and you can wipe them off. Be careful not to squeeze or pull the tick, you don't want to force their blood into you or remove all but the head.

I have been hunting all my life and have picked up a tick here or there. This you has been one of the worst I have seen. Our dogs come out loaded and I have had 2 this year. First tick in years and picked up 2 in the same year.

Not only the repellents but our vet also sees that they get a Lyme disease vaccination as well. Our vet see many cases of dogs getting the disease. Tics are bad where we live and yearly I get 3-4 or more on me too.

Ticks are bad in New England. All my dogs are vaccinated for Lyme and even when vaccinated one came down with it. I found out the vaccine is only 67% effective.

No vaccine is any where near 100% but 67% is better than none but when your dog come down with the disease it is of no comfort. Sorry to hear that. Ticks in our area and Lyme disease issues are growing rapidly but it is hard to use a repellent when you live in the middle of it. I get tics just going to the mail box.

With Nexgard & Bravecto out there to protect your dogs against ticks (they carry a lot more diseases than just Lyme) no reason to ever take a live tick off your dog again.

Ticks | CDC

Dogs should be vaccinated at least 2 weeks prior to needing protection in Lyme endemic areas

And once your dog is vaccinated, they will always test positive for Lyme. My vet told me that even when your dog has protection (topical or collar) they can still carry in ticks since the ticks see a good meal but don't bite.

Yup, Mine was on Nexgard and had the Lyme vaccine and boster prior for 2 yrs. He did test positive due to vaccine however when he was limping off and on for 8 months, nothing showing up, thinking he was injuring it playing, my vet realized he was repeatedly limping when added stress was placed on him. He had just finished competing at Westminster. Gave a trial of antibiotic because she thought he had undiagnosed Lyme. In 2 days limping was gone, we continued with it and now 2 yrs later no relapses. Aweful when you know something is wrong and don't know what it is.

I have had Lyme disease for years. It is an awful road. I can't reiterate enough to watch for ticks, mosquitoes, etc.

Even though I live and camp where it is a minimal threat, my dogs have been on K9 Advantix II or frontline plus over the years.

About 60 miles from (Mt Airy) Mayberry. 1/2 way between Roanoke VA and Greensboro NC. But we live in the country woods and grassy fields. Deer come up in the yard often.... 15 minutes from the Martinsville Speedway......
