i've been a WWII aviation fan all my life. flew a 1943 AT-6 for one of my birthdays.

used to live near the Chino Planes of Fame Museum. lots of restorations there.
almost got to volunteer at the local CAF, where they were restoring a B-25.
but, life got in the way.

one of my dreams is a trip to the Air/Space Museum.

please keep posting pics.

Rockwood,
Thanks for the great pics. Haven't been to the Smithsonian in a while but want to get back soon. My wife is a retired history teacher so she is very interested in anything dealing with any type of history.

thanks for that! what great memories.

by the way, that last B-17 that they rolled out, which model was it? it's not a G, like the ones in the older pics.
and how long a restoration was it?

I have many pic of the air craft displayed in the museum of my own and the construction of the Museum. I was at the museum one year before it open, they were pouring the floor when i arrived.
I have pic from inside of some of the air craft as well and i sat in the pilot seat.

We have the Connie and it was restored out side of the museum in the back next to the space hanger. The Connie was stored in one of the hangers at Dulles Airport along with the SR-71 Black Bird, Space Shuttle Enterprise along with a few other air craft. All of this great history were all towed from Dulles Airport to the Museum. This is a great place to visit in your RV travels.

Yes yes please !!!! More pictures ! I visited the museum a few years ago while were staying at Drummer boy Campground and couldn't get enough of it. If I ever travel that way again I want to visit it again. It is one of the best aviation musems I visited and I visit all of them if they are on my way to somewhere or back.

The first two pic are of the Concorde, One is where the Concorde is being towed to the Museum and the second one is when it had to be backed in to the main hanger and put into position for display...it toke a while to set it up.

The next three pic are of the Space Shuttle Enterprise, one is when it was being towed from Dulles Airport to the Museum just like the Concorde, the next shot is from with in the Space hanger, and the last pic is when the Shuttle was towed into the space hanger, as you can see the upper section of the the wall had to be removed to get the tail in side, this was design to be removed when the space hanger was built...The Enterprise i hear will be replaced with the Discovery shuttle once it is retired and that will be soon when the Shuttle program comes to and end.

rockwood06, thanks so much for starting this thread! Always been a fan of all flying things (aspiring Air Force ROTC that never made it to flying school ). This is a nice (may I say welcomed!) distraction from our day to day TT issues! Thanks again!
