When they made the police report, did the the agency taking the report check thoroughly to see if the trailer had been impounded? To keep roads safe, sometimes "abandoned" vehicles must be towed away. It's not unusual to have multiple law enforcement agencies covering the same area. Back in my working days, I was called to a home to take a report of a stolen auto. When I called our teletype unit (SOP), they advised that said auto had been crushed by a big semi (driver fell asleep)! Said auto broke down on a major limited access highway and, the driver went for help (leaving his car on the shoulder of the road). The auto was gone when the owner returned. A stolen vehicle report was not necessary. I advised the owner which tow company "hooked" what was left of his vehicle and went back in service.

If things haven't changed since the 80's, Indiana doesn't require plates on trailers under 3000#.

I'm not sure our OP can answer any of these questions since he got the information from his half-step-uncle-in-law or some such ("from a friend of a friend"). About all we can do is "keep an eye out for it."

I can make a long list of things I'd rather not a penny of my taxes went to. In this case that would be better than the family getting kicked twice by a thief.

I'm so sorry this has happened to your friend. Just a note on the location... I'm wondering if this has actually been taken closer to Edinburgh/Columbus, IN. (FB page says headed south to Clifty Falls SP, and the junction of I-65 and Hwy 31.) Just thought this piece of information may help those in the area keep their eyes open.
|
YES, you are right... US RT 31 winds south parallel to I-65 and I thought about the road I take when I go to Mammoth cave, which is 31/I-65 territory also. So yes, it probably is in Indiana...

That is rude.

I saw no advice from the person I was responding to. Just a comment of the thief can move it but not the owner and questioning that action. I'm sure if they could have moved it they would have. They are worried about their trailer, the thief is not.
But I'll apologize for any harshness and bow out.

We have these hidden in our cars, our boat and our fifth wheel, works great.
Satellite tracking country wide.
150 bucks a year each, well worth it.

Worst part is that the owner is military and looking to spend some family time before going away. Then this happens!

I don't know if that's a good thing or not, but I certainly hope it's a good thing and they get it back in good shape.

Evidently it was broken into. But the FB post didn't provide much info. The family did
make the best of a bad situation though. Also a lot of people stepped forward to let them know they could use their cabin or camper.
