F150 extended warranty

2018 F150 Super Crew 3.5L turbos, max tow package, 20 inch wheels, 12,000 tow capacity, towing a Surveyor 251RKS (6000lbs dry) in the Rockies. Question: buy a 8 year 125,000 Ford extended power train warranty for $2600
or do the regular maintenance and hope for the best??

99 chances out of 100 you will not need that warranty and/or it won’t pay for what is wrong. YMMV

I don't buy 3rd extended warranties but a factory extended warranty is a different animal.
I bought my used 2014 F150, that had 33k on it and I bought the 5 year factory extended warranty.

I never usually buy warranties but did so on my 2018 F-150 because of the electronics. Was $750 at my credit union for the same length warranty that Ford wanted $2500 for.

Price for a warranty is like anything else: negotiable. They make big margins on them because few people actually use them.

I had 73,000 miles on my 13 when I traded it for my 18 eco and had zero problems with it. The 18 has several improvements that fixed the moisture problem, and oil blowby problem of the first generation ecoboosts.

I'm in the don't buy camp. Finance professor a few years ago said keep the money you would spend on them in a separate savings account. Do that for everything you have an interest in buying the warranty on. Most likely, you will always have more money in that account than what your expenses will be. Good for building an emergency fund too.

The 18 also has port injection in addition to the direct injection to help clean the valves. Direct injection engines are know for carbon build up on valves and a small injector in the intake solves that issue. Main reason I bought the 18 over 17 and older 3.5 eco boost engines.

Bought my garbage Ecoboost @ 43K miles with the extended warranty for $2500.

My gamble paid off at 71k miles when the waste gates in the turbos failed to release the pressure built up by the turbos causing excessive heat to cause both exhaust manifolds to warp. 3 weeks in the shop, a $100 deductible, $300 out of pocket and $6,000 covered by the extended warranty, I was back on the road.

I sold it 2 days later because Ford's (actual) explanation was that I encountered a "doozy" of a problem. I also cashed out $900 of the time on the warranty that I never used.

Went to a gas guzzling, straight up V-8 F250 and have never looked back.

Buy the warranty. When you don't think you'll ever need it, you'll be glad you had it!

I have told of my experience a few times here on the forum, but here it is again.
I purchased an extended warranty from Ford on my 2012 F250 diesel at 98,000 miles. I negotiated a price of about $2,400 for an additional 50,000 miles of full drivetrain coverage.
At 129,000 the diesel engine self destructed after a glow plug broke into the engine.
I paid the $100.00 deductible plus $6.50 tax, and now have new, 2018, crate engine from Ford. I think the cost of the engine is about $16K.
Good decision on my part.

I would recommend buying the warranty from the manufacturer, and not a third party. With the Ford warranty there was no hassle. Whoops, engine is toast, we'll replace it. Done deal.
It did take seven weeks to complete.

I'm in the camp that says to get the extended warranty, IF it is from the manufacturer. I spent 20 years as a service advisor/service manager in Ford and Lincoln-Mercury dealerships, and had to deal many times with extended warranty issues. With the Ford extended warranty, you know right then and there if it is covered (once it is properly diagnosed, of course). With outside company warranties, I would have to call and get authorization. And often the outside extended warranty would have a limit on parts and labor prices, so sometimes customers were covered by the outside warranty but still had to pay big bucks for labor and parts prices beyond the coverage of the outside warranty. With labor rates currently about $130 hr. nationwide at dealerships, and parts prices rising every year as well, the $2600 is cheap insurance. By the way, our new tow vehicle (2017 Journey GT AWD) has a LIFETIME warranty on it, which Chrysler still offers. The retail is $4,900, but because I got the employee pricing through my grandson who works for Chrysler, it was $2,700. That means the Journey could have 300,000 miles on it, and covered items would still be taken care of by Chrysler with only a $100 deductible, as long as the repair did not exceed the value of the vehicle at the time of repair. And if the value of the vehicle is not worth the repair, Chrysler gives me my $2,700 back. Cannot beat that deal!

The only time i ever bought a factory warranty was on a Lexus. It was a 5 year 100K warranty and it was around $1000. If you never used the warranty after the 5 years, you got all your money back. They bank on people selling their vehicle before the 5 years since the offer only applied to the original owner. I knew I was keeping the car for a long time. Ended up keeping it 13 years and 220K miles.


As I said before, I have an aftermarket warranty on my F-150. For 1/4th the price, I decided it was worth the chance.

X2 I'm in the other boat also...Wife has a 2014 Ford Explorer the Sunroof motor gave out in 2017 after the 3 year 36K Warranty was up we bought the Ford Extended warranty for 6yrs 100K the bill was the $100 deductible service tech said it would have cost almost 2K if it was out of pocket wth the cost of the new motor and labor it paid for itself in one visit.

I bought a 7 year 75K extended warranty on my 2015 RAM 2500 don't remember exactly what I paid for it but I'm already about $800 into with a replaced coolant tank and some various hoses....Plus I get a free loaner from the dealer. Labor rates are $$$$ It's not a daily driver and I'm sure I will run out of time before miles.

It's easy to say just bank the money you would have paid for the extended warranty....Considering if you have a monthly payment on top of that...I found it easier just to have it lumped in the monthly payment...Yeah I know it cost more $$$ to do that but I was fine with that....I'll save a few bucks somewhere else

You don’t have to buy from your dealer. As long as you are still in the 3 year / 36 k original warranty window, you can buy the factory extended warranty from any dealer. Below are links to different Ford dealers that sell them online. They sell a crap load of then at just above their cost. You can plug in your specifics to get a quote.
