You do get your money back via sale of trade in. 2011 F250 XLT, CC, long bed, diesel, 53,300 miles, paid $39,124 and got $25,500, like new condition. That is 65% of cost and I had it for 7 years and 7 months.

My Silverado 5.3 pulling 9k got 8 to 9 mpg. My 2500 6.6 gets 13,sometimes 14, mpg with 11k 5er. My insurance was not much different other than the change from a 36k p/U to a 50k p/u.

I used to track my mpg just to see. Eventually I stopped. Why, because if I need to be that worried about it I need to sell the camper.

Yesterday I pulled my new trailer about 125 miles and was shocked by the lousy gas mileage. I was getting 3 kms per litre or for my American friends, 7.1 miles per gallon! I have a GMC Sierra 3500 HD (6l gasoline engine). So far I have not loaded the trailer with more than about 600 lbs, so I’m way below the load limit. Every little hill and the truck would down shift and the engine would be running around 4500 to 5000 RPM. I tried using the “trailer mode” to see if that made any difference (it didn’t). I’ve always used regular gas in my truck, so I don’t know if a higher octane fuel would help (comments anyone?).

Any thoughts on whether this is typical? Should I change fuel octane? Do I need to purchase a larger fuel tank (mine is only 35.7 gallons)? Do I need to purchase a diesel truck?

Any and all helpful comments are welcome.

Cheers,

Bruce
Traded my 2500HD 6.0L Gas for a Diesel... That's about what I would get with a smaller trailer... Best towing my 281rlds was about 9.5 MPG...Tow Mode or no Tow Mode the mileage was about the same... Tow mode the transmission did not shift as much, and held the gears a little longer...

My truck listed for $50,000.00 but I paid $34,000.00. I traded in a 2008 2500 diesel that I owed more on truck than it was worth. I have 150,000 miles on this 2012 3500 diesel and I was offered $19,000 before I deleted the emissions. I want to trade for another 3500 SRW 2019 Silverado but the 2012 is paid for.

Dont really think it matters when it comes to trading if you trade a diesel for a diesel you may think you are ahead same as trading a gaser same money just less expensive of truck. I get good bucks out of my gasers and one reason low mileage. Later RJD

Yes. It wasn’t so a post to tout gas vs diesel- those threads run long and get nutty.

It was more about not judging the truck’s fuel mileage after just one pull.

Hope that helps!

FWIW - I get between 8.5-9.5 pulling our trailer. I hand calc every fill up mostly because I'm curious. I'm happy with that and is exactly what I expected to get. I run regular gas which is E10 in these parts. I don't run faster than 65, usually a little below that. Pulling any grades I like to keep the RPM at 4000+ and let her sing. I can easily maintain 55-60...or go as fast as I want.

Wow, it's hard to believe that so many people have replied to my little post. Thankyou to everyone, it's been very enlightening and entertaining to say the least! I even learned a few things!

For my part, I drove home on Sunday and the gas mileage was much better than it was three days beforehand. Wind was more in my favor, and I took a route that was East of the foothills, so less up and down hills. I also drove at a faster speed, roughly 62 mph. Fuel economy went up to 9.6 MPG, so this confirms the opinion of several people here. It will vary a lot based on driving conditions!

Thanks to everyone that has replied.

Trade for a diesel if you tow more than 4 times a year or go long distance

Diesel makes a difference if you tow a lot. If you're only going to tow 3 or 4 times a year and only short trips, the diesel just won't seem justified. But if you long-haul and/or if you want to tow most every month, then the diesel will make you smile, a lot.
They are a bit more expensive. I just bought my first one. 1-ton Chevy. I won't ever tow with anything else with what I've experienced with this change from gas to diesel. It's just made for it.

Good luck!

WhiteEagle,
We just bought the same 5er you have. I tow with a 2017 F350 SRW CC 6.2 with a 373 rear end. I’m getting 7-8.5 so far. Will be mounting new Sailun S637 tires next week. We’ll see if that impacts my mileage. Our first long haul is coming up in January. St. Louis to Ft. Meyers. I hope to hold my speeds around 65 and keep my MPG above 8.
