Lessons in Registration

2 lessons actually... (1) I’m learning to look thinks up in the history on this forum. I could have saved a little angst by studying up on the process for registering my first time RV. (2) I purchased our rig back in October in Amarillo and drove it home to Albuquerque. It was advertised and sold as a 2016 but then I noticed the chassis VIN, all the door post labels and the owners manual were 2015. Called the dealer and he explained that’s common practice as the RV manufacturers have a lot full of chassis’s which they build upon and often in the following year. Well, I forgot that discussion by the time I could get into MVD for registration in February and their physical verification of the VIN. (The state MVD offices were shut down due to COVID.) I wasn’t paying attention and they registered the RV as 2015, defaulting to the chassis VIN. I complained to the dealer who got it corrected to 2016. The lesson learned is that the overriding document is the Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) which has the date the RV was built.

Sounds like a big pain, my lesson was more of ignorance. I had sticker shock when I received my registration renewal from the CA-DMV. $900!!! I was used to $125 for my passenger cars. Never in 40 years have i paid more than $125.... So why would this be different... Never gave it a second thought, Then I figured our that the registration in CA is based on the purchase price. Did not put 1+1 together for about 15 min.

Mine was $2k out here in Nevada!

In Illinois we pay $151.00 for Autos and $101.00 for a Class A Motorhome, makes sense to me.
