Negotiation tomorrow

Negotiate 2020 artic Wolf 285drl4. Not sure how much to offer. Got an email quote about 2K off the internet price. Should they come down more?
Can’t decide to try trading my working 1997. The NADA list is 4500 -5500. How much should I expect?
Since this model is not coming back for 2021 should that lower the price or should I even buy it since this is it for the model?

Based on 37% off msrp (what a lot of us have paid, ballpark) I'd be around 25K, 28K top.

Expect wholesale or below on anything you trade ... especially a 23 year old unit. They may juggle numbers on paper to make it appear you're getting top dollar on any trade in, but reality is what I first stated. If you have the patience, try selling your 97 on your own.

X2. You will almost always get more selling it yourself. And then the negotiations on your new one are much simpler and straightforward

Not sure if it works on RV's but it works for me on cars. I negotiate the price for the new car (rv in this case) first. Then I negotiate the trade in value. Then if the dealer wants to mess with the numbers they can as long as
1) the delta remains the same
2) I do not get hosed on taxes/registration (this one depends on how your state does things)

Of course, be willing to walk away and wait a few days. You may miss out on the trailer. There will be others. Make sure you have a firm ceiling you will not go over before you walk in.

I have made many negotiating mistakes in my time and have learned many lessons. It's nice to have enough experience now to take advantage of it.

What is MSRP in the RV industry? A type written sheet of paper taped to the kitchen counter?
Op, do not trade the old unit, sell it yourself, you will only get $500 for a trade in.
Be prepared to sit through the finance manger ordeal and gauntlet. High pressure sales tactics to get you to buy an extended warranty, appearance warranties, tire warranties and maintenance service contracts.
Just say no.

FYI..don't know how may other states have a trade-in sales tax credit. Here in MI, 100% of the dealer RV trade-in amount is subtracted from the purchase price when determining MI 6% sales tax. For a private sale, you will pay the entire 6% on a unit. The Trade-in tax 'savings' amount should be considered in total purchase amount.

Ga is similar. But the purchaser of the used unit in a private party sale pays the sales tax (actually it's a TAVT or Title Ad Valorem Tax and not a true sales tax, based on a state chart of value of the vehicle/unit) which is paid as part of the registration when they transfer the title to their name. It's a one time tax at the initial transfer to the new owner.

Remember this is strictly a business deal for the dealer so you should make it a business deal for you as well. If you show emotion ( attachment/excitement) you will end up leaving money on the table. Make sure early on in the discussion, they have your phone # or email and be prepared to walk away and wait a day or two.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK...
... then offer an OTD price and see how they respond.
This eliminates any ‘surprises’ and cuts the chase. Let the sales guy work the numbers any way he wants.

I just did this two weeks ago on a luxury 5er.
Bottom line = I got 34% off of MSRP, and that is all-in, trailer, taxes, plate, everything.

The MSRP sheet comes from the manufacturer with all the documentation when it is delivered to the dealer. This is available to anyone that wants to see it on our lot.

IMHO, dealers make up their own MSRP numbers. Seen way too much variations in MSRP prices, on the same exact model with same options, between different dealers.

Less than you are willing to pay at first. All they can say is no. It's not like they can cancel Christmas or shoot your dog.

I doubt any dealer will give you anything for a 23 year old trade-in... There are people that might buy one that old, but not from a dealer who at least wants to make a few hundred dollars profit without any headaches...

Agree. That's why when making an offer one should.use a average of MSRP they can find online. Our lender gave a better rate as long as we were less than 10% over the dealers factory invoice. We received that rate. Lender would not reveal how much we were above the dealers factory invoice.

Thank all of you for your advice. It really did help. We did not buy. The guy said the quote he gave me In an email was a mistake on his part and he could not go lower but he would honor that price + county taxes (we would pay sales tax in our home state)+lot fee+ Travel package. We walked.
My big surprise was the travel pkg would cost me almost 700 for a battery water n sewer hose regulator and fill 2 20 lb Propane tanks. This is our only second time to even look at a new RV. But the other time hoses and battery came with it.
Keeping our old faithful a while longer. She still works looks good and is bettter quality. Again thank you.

Good Choice. The Deal will be there in August when it is still on the lot somewhere.

Jeez....that old song is so old it's not even on the classics chart anymore. That salesman was a poor excuse and a worse liar.

Yep, the travel package is just dealer profit, propane and batteries should be included at no charge
