I did a little research after reading this post and discovered the 30 and 60 day registration option! I inquired at the SofS office last time I registered if there were options and the girl just shrugged her shoulders. We can probably save close to $300 yearly by registering twice a year for 60 days each and one more for 30 days.

That’s why I don’t live in Maine any more.

Seeing some of the numbers out there I’m glad I’m in PA. Hopefully officials won’t see what other states do and follow suit.

When looking for place to retire I figured out states are going to get their money somehow it’s just in a different way.

Places that have no income tax have taxes in other things that make up for it. Ie taxing all groceries, adding taxes on car registrations etc.

And then no property tax, right? That's the biggie!

No we have property tax but no sales tax, the biggie is we have a higher wage tax. Property taxes are really not that bad and all the near by state residents come here to buy big ticket items because of the no sales tax. Now don't think you can come to De. to buy cars and rv's and such as you WILL pay state tax when you register them in your home state.

Yea, that's why our vehicle registration isn't too bad. We get screwed on income tax and property tax. But, for trailers:

Quote:
Fees

The annual fee is $5.39 for each 500 pounds or fraction of 500 pounds, maximum gross weight, with a minimum annual fee of $14.38. The fee is prorated on a daily basis.
You may also need to pay taxes and plate fees.

So, our 3800gtw Nano would be $43.12 per year.

Appears there’s another class of registration for camper trailers... 🤨

What is the damage compared to what you stated? You know registering for first time there are extra fees besides registration that you don’t have on subsequent ones. Plate fee, title fee, sales tax.

We’ll find out soon, guessing around $150 with plate fees. But there’s no value tax other than 7.5% sales tax.

Read through Wisconsin law here and it’s a little hard to follow however I believe you can register an RV in this state while being a nonresident if you purchase it here. Yearly registration here for me is $15 dollars. Again, I could be way off.

Below link talks mainly of sales tax but touches on registration being allowed by nonresidents

Registration options

Looks like Wisconsin is not a reciprocal state that unless you plan on keeping it registered in Wisconsin (which my be referenced in different subsection of law)
you will have to pay sales tax in both Wisconsin and buyers home state, Wisconsin when bought and home state when registered and titled.

The section you referred to was that unless out of state individual either bring a transfer/temp tag from their home state or pre register the trailer before picking up that once wdot gets notified about issuing a 90,60,or 30 day temp plate, sales tax and use tax is due to Wisconsin. Then you will have to pay sales tax again in home state (possibly)

Unlike when I went from PA to OH to pick/purchase mine, they titled and supplied 90 day temp tag in OH, I signed paper that stated I would pay sales tax in my home state. When I registered and titled in PA I paid my sales tax to only PA.

Yes, Wisconsin is one of those states that does not exempt out of state customers from sales tax. Which is the reason I would never buy an RV there. States like Arizona, Michigan, Missouri and Oklahoma do exempt out of state buyers. There are more, but those are ones that do that I have researched. I only buy in states like that because Alaska has no sales tax, so the savings for me are significant.

I want to move to TN so bad! I lived in Millington outside Memphis for a time in 1983-1984. Can almost feel the quarter horse beneath me charging up and over those rolling green hills....

But your sales tax is higher and and varies dependent on what locality you live in.

Even so, you have to buy a HECK of a lot of stuff to generate enough sales tax to eclipse a 10k property tax bill!

The annual NY registration fee on my 5,045 lb camper is $86.50 but gets pro rated from a 12/31/19 date. We'll register 4/1/20 - 12/31/20 for a cost of around $65. (Glad I just looked at the form. Includes a reminder that the camper inspection expires 7/31/17 so now I'll have to drive over to the DMV to show them my current inspection sticker - keep in an envelope, not glued to the camper).

My property taxes dropped like a rock once I turned 65.

I wish that worked in NJ! I wouldn't be so anxious to flee. Glad trailers don't get inspected here, more hassle. Trailer registrations in NJ all expire at end of March, regardless of when you registered. I got my trailer in November and waited until March to tag and title it, wasn't about to throw away a year's registration to have it sit in the driveway for a few months. No pro-rating in NJ. If you unregister or sell a vehicle, even right after registration, you eat it.

I registered our RV around this time last year, and I think I paid $55.00 for a permanent registration. This is in Missouri.
