For less money, you also got a full extra week of vacation in addition to the other benefits that you and others have mentioned.

I just spent eight days camping, one night hoboing it up in a Chick fil A parking lot, seven in the CG, ate mainly in the camper. Grand total?
$542.00 Hard to beat that for a vacation, really hard to beat. As I said, I currently consider the payment part of the household budget, but that was fuel, food, camping fees, a little shopping.
So it depends on how you slice it and what you want to do.

I would agree RV costs more than Motels. Just the cost of having fun. I am still at least 12 years away from retirement.
We love getting away to the woods and lakes. Like our trip to Goshen, visited different places. Travelling is part of getting there. We have been in nature and the DW has seen Moose and Deer outside our trailer in the morning and Boo Boo and Yogi visiting the garbage can down the road. Next trip is Birch Run and Frankenmuth in October, I get a side trip to Camping World i hope .

Even when you talk about "cheap" hotels when we add the cost of feeding 2 teenagers (who were also swimmers) for every meal the price of the hotel starts to climb. We love being outside. I can't tell you how many people I have met over the years camping that if we were in a hotel we would have probably just passed in the hall. Some of these people I now call friends. Plus I haven't found a hotel yet that will let me build a campfire outside my door.

I think it depends on where you go. We spent 2.5 weeks on the road going as far as Montana from Louisiana. 6 of those nights were in truck stops, rest stops and Wally World.
If we had stayed in hotels in some of those places it would have been rather expensive. A few of the campgrounds were really cheap but nice.
We burned 430 gallons of diesel on 4,500+ mile trip. Just on the cost of diesel alone, I don't think we could have stayed cheaper since some of towns were resort towns. Also bringing the dogs along saved on boarding.
Not to mention when traveling out west I would have had to make some long diversions to find a flush john!
Still it doesn't matter. It is very difficult to go back to staying in hotels after staying in the RV.

I very seriously doubt that camping is actually cheaper... That being said, motel living and RVing are 2 different things. There is no way that motel living is as much fun... I know because my former job had about 80% travel by vehicle over Louisiana, East Texas, West Texas and New Mexico, and I basically lived in hotels for 17 years. I'm not sure why these two things are being compared... to me there's no comparison. So, if you can't justify the cost of RVing, and that's a big concern for you... Uuuuhh...

Thought about this a few times and this is how I/we look at it:
NO RV
no trip to the Outer Banks - 4 nights
no weekend getaway to Stone Mt. - 2 nights
no weekend getaways to Ebeneezer Park - 8 nights total 4 weekends
no weekend getaway to Spartanburg - 2 nights
no weekend getaways to Dan Nicholas Park - 4 nights total 2 weekends
These are just the weekends with nothing to do.
6 night true vacation planned for March 2015 on the Florida panhandle
These weekends would require a bug infested hotel without our RV
3 nights in Nashville
4 nights in Va. Beach
2 nights in Salem, Va.
2 nights in Savannah,Ga.
4 nights in Raleigh, Nc. 2 weekends
I'm sure next year's schedule will be the same so I'll take my RV over dreaded roach motel any day.
Throw in the quality time with the family, priceless.
I'm not sure about any of y'all, but have you ever tried making s'mores in a hotel room?

Forgot one of the most important things:
no RV - no awning pole brackets from OC!

Next time you stay at a hotel, bring a small black light along.
Ugh...

I am only 50, but if I could stay married I would be a lot closer. This is #3....there won't be a number 4. If she gets tired of me then it is the way It's supposed to be.

What's the difference between a mistress, a hooker and a wife?
The mistress says, "You're done already?"
The hooker says, "You ain't done yet?"
And the wife says, "Beige. I think we'll paint the ceiling beige."
(Sorry to steal the thread; I couldn't help myself!)
