So why even put a DVD player in? Blu-ray is the only format for high Def discs. I assume it's because the cheap vendors they use only support DVD? And, does every campsite have WiFi to stream movies? To me, it would be incredibly cheap to just use Blu-ray players which also support standard DVDs.

The disc hardware to play audio CD's will also play DVD's as seen in computers for decades. Since they are going to install a radio with a CD player you might as well use the DVD capability also. The Blueray hardware is a more costly hardware upgrade and even at this point not all will play music CD's.

ray89, I don't want to bust your bubble but you have this 180 out. The blu-ray players will play blu-ray, dvd and all music cd's
dvd players will play all dvd and all music disk but not blu-ray
cd players will only play music cd's and will not play dvd or blu-ray disk.

...
Guys, I agree the blu-ray does cost more, I figured seeing how I have to change out my concertone anyway ( it no longer plays the dvd or cd, doesn't even turn on half the time... ) I want to get the latest technology ( blu-ray ) and get the external blu-ray player off the shelf and have only one unit ( built in like it should be ) and all would be good... This is not the case... So I'm still searching for what is best in my case... Maybe one of the sony car dvd players and make it fit... Still looking...

Wait a bit and Sony has a double din Blu Ray player on the way. Otherwise the only blu ray player I have seen is a single DIN stand alone player that you would have to add to your existing Radio in its own slot. Not much choice out there now as most automotive headrest screens are not of high quality nor big enough to matter with a higher definition signal.

Why no Blu-Ray for the RV?

I suspect it's the same reason I don't have one - don't need it. On-demand cable TV, Hulu, and Netflix have made Blu-Ray obsolete.

We don't need the high resolution in the TT, but we do at home and would like to be able to play the same movie on the road rather than buy a separate DVD copy.

Hmm. Buy a second copy in DVD or buy a second Blu-ray???

Decisions, decisions.

Here is my take:

1. Blu-Ray is HD. Picture is better than DVD, regardless of HDTV size.
2. When I buy movies, it is on Blu-Ray. I no longer buy DVDs.
3. I don't want to be limited to my DVD collection when I bring movies with me from home.
4. Streaming movies (Amazon, Netflix, etc.) isn't very realistic (probably never realistic) in a camper.

My truck has WiFi and my phone has WiFi. I have 16GB per month. Data plans are getting bigger and cheaper. As time goes on, it's going to get easier and easier to stream in your RV.

I can and do, however your 16gb will be gone in about 3 movies.

Unless you have true unlimited data, that really isn't a viable option.

I have a 30gb plan and it goes fast.

The data plans are still very expensive when you start using them for streaming.

We bought a Blu-Ray player for the TT because the factory Concertone is poor and we have a lot of Blu-Ray disks at home that the boys want to bring along. A DVD player can't play those disks. The Concertone is used strictly for the radio.

I agree that using your data plan isn't feasible yet for viewing movies. Also wireless streaming at most CGs is a joke. We have dish hopper at home so we can store 500 hours of HD. We can also transfer those movies to an external hard drive (2 TB limit currently) that we hook up to the 211k receiver in the 5ver. So we have several hundred stored movies to watch. As I said earlier, we haven't bought DVD, CD, or bluerays in years. I believe it's just a matter of time before all that type of hard media goes the way of the dinosaur.

As I originally stated: As time goes on, it's going to get easier and easier to stream in your RV.

5G is coming in about 2-3 yrs. It will be another quantum leap similar to 3G to 4G. I think you'll be surprised.

In the USA that may be feasible but in a geographically huge country like Canada with 1/10th the population living predominantly in urban centers, and fewer companies competing for market share because of the lower population, that's unlikely to happen up here. 5G will be here, but it won't be widely available beyond the urban centers and the main corridors between them.

It's really not a bad thing though. There will always be physical storage media that you can plug into the latest media player equipment.

You have a good point. On the other hand, campgrounds will "eventually" have to improve their WiFI, because campers will demand it.

I'm guessing the only thing we can really argue over regarding better technology is "when?"

5g/4g/3G isn't the issue (well it is kind of). Cost is the main issue.

That would be good IF we had internet at out camp ground, we do not! I have a ton of blu-ray did now that the girls watch all the time.
That's why!

I'm just explaining MY thoughts on why RV's don't come with them. (Don't shoot the messenger!)

You have a good reason why they should, but obviously, the manufacturers don't care if you have a stack of BluRays and DD's who want to watch them. BluRay players would cost MORE!

And I'm guessing there are more people in my boat than yours.

The additional cost of adding BluRay support would be minimal to the base cost of an RV and could easily be added to the price. More likely the manufacturers could make it an upgrade and charge even more.

After some thought adding just a BluRay would still leave them behind the curve. The BluRay I added to the trailer is also internet capable so acts more as a media server than just a movie player. In conjunction with my travel modem I can watch hard media (BluRay, DVD, USB, etc), stream or surf. Given the history of the RV manufactures I'm not sure I would want them making an RV internet ready. So what I would rather see is more forethought on people adding their own equipment like they do with TV sets. This would have made it easier for me to add my equipment rather than trying to work through speaker holes and small cutouts.

Oh, how many times have I've read, "The additional cost of adding ______ would be minimal to the base cost of an RV and could easily be added to the price" on this forum? Dozens.

Fill in the blank:
Tires
Faucets
toilets
tanks
cabinets
stove
fridges
AC's
etc., etc.
