Purchasing Diesel Fuel for the Solera
I have not seen much discussion on Diesel fuel purchases. Just wondering if you use a Credit Card or Truck discount card, etc. (Best Discounts) for your purchases. Your thoughts please-Thanks in advance.
Respectfully to all,
Zama

I'll pay using whatever I have available (credit, debit, cash). As for discounts, get the GasBuddy app is you have a smart phone - it will use your location to show you the cheapest fuel near you.
I've learned something else as well - if I have the trailer hooked up, I go to the truck pumps at the truck stops. Pros - easier to get in/out, and the pumps run 10 times faster. Cons - diesel fuel all over the ground; wipe your feet before getting back in.

I've often wondered if diesel fuel varies much in quality. I've found that gasoline does and that's why I often go with the big brands like Shell and BP. But with deisel, prices don't seem to swing that much, so I still end up at the Shell.
Another thing - get you some latex gloves and keep them in the pocket on your driver's door. Keeps the diesel smell off your hands, steering wheel, interior, etc.
I find the Flyin J and other big truck stops to be an exercise in frustration. The "RV" pumps are layed out by someone without a clue about getting an RV around. The truck lanes are usually filthy. The swipe card thing had me quite confused the first times I tried to use my credit card, so I just had to go inside.
And why is there always some knob in his Prius parked in front of the diesel pump?

I've put a little over 7000 miles on my Solera this year and only had one case where I had to go to a truck lane (the only diesel lane at the time). I've found it easier to use a credit card and pay it off afterI get home I have a reward point system on my card.

Pilot and Flying J have those "Plus" cards for Good Sam's Club members. It is a fuel credit card and gives a discount for diesel and gas. Can't remember how much at the moment. You need to watch though sometime even with the discount their price's are more. I too use the GasBuddy app on my phone...

The thing I don't like about pilot is you have 2 options, a $1000 limit that you pay when you get the bill or a higher limit when they have access to your bank account for direct withdraw. I don't let anyone have direct withdraws for my bank acount.

I use ExxonMobil mostly. Because I work for them and get discount. As far as different fuel at different station. I can tell you usually every station in an area all get the fuel from the same place. Each brand just adds their own additives to it.

They have 2 types. One is just a discount card, 3 cents off I think. The other is a credit card that gives 5 cents off I believe. The ones around here want to charge 3 to 5 cents per gallon unless you pay with cash.
I also use the gas buddy app.

As tmmar stated, but you do have to watch the pumps at some truck stops. It should be #2 diesel. I had the same problem when I went on vacation where I come from there are labels on the pumps showing that the're low sulfer but in Calif. and some other states they don't have that label.

We just made a trip from Twin Cities to the Blacks Hills and back and found out my F-250 6.0 ran better on BP, Mobil than on Flying J or Pilot-- trying to hold a steady speed on J or Pilot it missed but on BP/Mobil it ran smooooooth..........and a scoesch better mileage.

I have a SuperFleet card that I use at Pilot and I usually get .03-.05 off automatically at the pump. Not sure how or why, but I'm not going to spoil a good thing by asking questions.

I used one local station for all of my cars and trucks. It was not ExxonMobil.
One of there additives was water. I had about a gallon of water in a 30 gallon gas tank on my Chevy 1500HD.
It was not actually an additive. This particular station just did a poor job o monitoring their tanks.
I know that in San Jose, CA there are two gas pipelines from the refinery in Richmond down to the terminal in San Jose where they fill the trucks. One pipe is for Chevron and the other pipe is for everyone else.
As you said, it is at the terminal that the additives are added.
