Very loud AC fan...normal?

Bought our 308BHS a few weeks ago...camped for 2 of those. One thing I noticed is that when the main ducted 15K AC kicks on, you can barely carry on a conversation the fan is so loud. I'm comparing this with a friend who has a 2 year old Jayco 32BHDS (also ducted 15K AC). I was just in his unit, and the difference was night and day - his was so much quieter, even on the high fan setting. Am I alone here or does anyone have the same experience? We knew ours was loud right away...but now that we compared...it just got a lot louder!!

Ours is loud too. You can set your Thermostat so that the fan runs on low speed, and that helps. Took me a while to figure that out!

We choose to suffer through the noise and be cooler. It wouldn't take long to learn to love the noise as apposed to sweating.

Which is why we replaced our Dometic noise maker with an Atwood heatpump. Higher capacity, lower amperage draw and order of magnitude quieter. Also a real difference between low, medium and high fan speeds.

Now that Dometic owns Atwood, hopefully the quality won't suffer.

Interesting. I figured they were all the same. My friend with the nice quietly cool Jayco has a Coleman-Mach. So it's the Dometic units then?

Yeah, I thought we were stuck with the loud racket. But my wife figured out the "up and down" buttons would adjust fan speed. We have a second unit in the master that we run, so it's not too warm in the main living area.

I second the Attwood. My dealer changed mine out for us no charge. It was the 2nd air.in bed room. Now I can sleep and not have a huricane going on in the bedroom.

Setting it to a lower fan speed may be nice for noise, but depending on where you are camping, you will soon begin to sweat a bit.

We have two A/C units and turn the one nearest us on low and the opposite one one high. (nightime - bedroom fan on low and living room on high).

If you are in dirt dauber country, it can be that if the dirt dauber chooses to build on a fan blade, the imbalance will cause a loud fan. Must pull off cover to look, so you have to climb up your ladder and work on your roof. Not a big deal to do that though.

That is what happened to me. Dirt dauber did it last summer, and I didn't use it till this Spring. It was loud.

No responses....hmmm....Not kidding folks, for any problem involving an appliance attached to an RV or for air intake or air pollution control problems, sometimes even exhaust pipe problems, for the engine of any RV or vehicle that may sit for any length of time during the months of June, July, or August in the Dirt Dauber belt of the good ole USA, I would estimate that nearly 25% of the problems are caused by Mud or Dirt Daubers constructing nests in places that hinder proper operation of said component. If you don't believe this to be a problem, and it is of course not necessarily the cause of the problem reported by this thread originator, just start snooping around the cubbyholes of your unit. You may be unpleasantly surprised. I expect RV repairmen will confirm that the ordinary Dirt Dauber is responsible for 25% of his positive repair shop cash flow. Also, as an aside, your repairman probably will not tell you that you brought your rig in and all he did was to remove a Dirt Dauber clod of dirt.

If you live where these seemingly passive little critters make a living for themselves, looking for Dirt Dauber nests should be the first step of investigation for improper operation. One should not underestimate the impact of these critters.

I'm aware of how they can ruin things (FL)- in my case, this is a brand new unit that we took delivery on 3 weeks ago. Great info that I'll be keeping in mind for future though. I wonder if there is a way to prevent them the way we have flying insect screens on our furnace vents

I had on in my 23 lb that started quiet but fan bearing seazed, when I spun it by hand it then worked but very mousey. Called the manufactur and they sent me a new motor that I paid a dealer to install.

I have 2 Dometic roof mounted units. One ducted and one directly over the master bed. Both are extremely noisy. The one over the bed has 3 speeds that don't change the fan at all.

No prob, figured yours was a new one.

Continuing to talk to myself, I guess: Was just pointing out how things like that can be a problem and am actually surprised how little info there is on this forum about what people do to prevent this problem. Course it actually only occurs when your RV is left idle for parts of the summertime.

Is a mundane but a very significant problem, and it actually deserves its own thread. Sorry if it looks like I am trying to hijack your thread. I have to point out though that DD's are no respecters of where the RV is parked. Sometimes RV's sit a good while before they are sold.

You can install screen material in the outside vents. Some will say it restricts the air flow. Yes, it does...very slightly. However, it is still better than finding critters have made a nest up there. Same with the refrigerator, water heater, and heater vents, install screening material to keep them out.
