replaced the murphy bed mattress with a residential foam
The factory supplied mattress in our RP-192 was horrible. I guess everyone already knows this. After less than a week of use there was a pronounced depression in the center that caused my wife and I to roll towards each other.
I've been inundated with ads for overpriced RV mattress replacements. Instead I bought an 8" residential foam mattress on Amazon. 2" layer of memory foam on top. One reason we liked the r-pod models is that the queen size bed is a large real queen, 60x80, so it makes buying a standard mattress possible. I was concerned that I'd have to figure out how to slice the bottom of the thing to let the murphy bed fold up, but that's not the case. The bed still folds up fine without modifying the new mattress. It's much heavier than the original, so lifting the murphy into place is a little harder but not too bad. The thing sags a little under its own weight but makes the bend OK.
We'll store it in the open position to make sure it doesn't get a permanent crease, but the way the thing arrived vacuum bagged and heavily compressed, I'm not too worried about creasing. The foam rebounded very fast when opened.
The mattress is thicker than the 6" factory mattress, but as you can see from the pic it still clears the bottom frame of the front window. Original mattress is the second pic. After one test sleep we're happy with it. It's firm, but not too much - the memory foam layer is perfect. It has a heavy solid feel. By that I mean there's no movement when either of us rolls over. With the factory mattress you could feel every little movement of your partner, almost like you were on an air mattress or undamped waterbed.
