Sanitizing the water heater

Should the water heater tank be sanitized with bleach when sanitizing the water system?

Interesting question. We've always just flushed our hot water heater out. Don't know if bleach would affect the anode.

I'll probably catch heck for saying this, but the only time I sanitized our water system was when it was new. We are into our 4th season and have had no issues. Its never had anything but non-municipal water in it, for whatever that's worth. I always figured there was enough chlorine in it to not have to worry about it.

I ran chlorinated water thru it, flushed it. We used to drink from a garden hose, mine was rubber, I didn't die.

When I sanitized my fresh water tank with bleach I ran the water through the WH. Flushed the fresh water tank and WH 2 times and emptied both tanks until I go on a trip. I don't think I harmed anything.

Hoses are made with different chemicals than they used to be. I'd be worried about the grand kids more than myself.
