I still remember the exact spot I stood when the news switched to coverage of the first plane.
I was at work, and rarely paid attention to the showroom television, but for some reason
I did that time. So many lives lost.

I will never forget. I was on the 11th floor of a building in Alexandria, VA. I was looking out the window at the smoke from the Pentagon, and seeing out of the corner of my eye the smoke from the first tower on the television. My wife often went to the Pentagon; fortunately not that day. Had no cell service and it took me two hours to go the five miles to pick her up. I will never forget.

I'll never forget it either especially after watching a great documentary "In Plane Sight" on Netflix.

I was in Taiwan as a DOD contractor assisting the Taiwan Army in creating their first Military Intelligence Battalion. The soldiers contacted me and told me to turn on the news.

We will NOT forget. We lost friends and co-workers that day, both in the air and on the ground. My bride is a 37 year flight attendant, and spent several years living in NYC. Thankfully she was off that day.

The 26 of us at our branch office watched this catastrophe unfold on a small b&w tv in our conference room, praying for our IT and finance people located in the WTC. 297 perished in the collapse.

I was at 24,000 feet abeam Greenland in a C-130 returning from Europe. Even though we were a military aircraft with current IFF secrets, we were denighed entry to the CONUS.

I spent the next week as a guest of the Canadian Government at a military base in Greenwood, Nova Scotia.

I have to say, we were treated very well. Food, quarters, and (libations) were freely given and certainly appreciated. When we got home, Certificates of Appreciation were sent to every unit that helped us that week.

Was working with my father that day. The house we were working on was a man who had a meeting in the north tower that morning. All day his wife was home in a panic if he was okay because phones were down. He lived, ran late by 30 minutes due to the NY traffic, saved his life that day.

When I got done work I remember being in the shower when my phone was blowing up. County called for a task force to go to NY to start preparing to fill in the city fire stations. I was the rescue lieutenant and needed to put together a crew. We were set to leave that night but we were called off.

Two days later we were resent a request and made the trip to ground zero. Helped hand out supplies. Along with fire apparatus we had a convoy of box trucks and Thousands of dollars of donated food, water, search and rescue tools and money.

It was a scary time and place but there was still hope that people would be found alive. There was no comprehending the reality of the loss of life.

I never joined the military, it is a regret I have. 9/11 motivated me to become a medic and then a cop. In my eyes it was my way to fight for those who cannot fight for or defend themselves here on the home front, to help ensure another 9/11 would never happen again.

But then again I look back after 15 years of this at that 20 kid I was and wonder what was I thinking!
