We ended up buying a sheet of wall panelling (shiny wood look on one side, textured on the other) and cut it so it would fit over half the couch and half the carpeted box. We also bought a 1 1/2" memory foam topper to put over the mattress. The bed is much more comfortable now. We can bare it and I don't wake up sore. When the bed is not in use, we push the panel all the way over the carpeted box and are then able to set up the couch.
It's not perfect, but it works for us.
I was initially disappointed as well when I slept in the bed the first night we took our 2501SS out. In fact, I was mad! Then I seen that Forest River changed the plan and the bed was replaced with a murphy bed (an actual wood bed frame that folds down and the mattress lays on it). But we had already bought our unit - what could we do? We brought it in for warranty and to have the bed looks at and adjusted. The "adjustment" they made didn't help at all. So we took Gus's advice and tried to remedy ourselves. Now at least it is bearable.
