OP - if you're thinking you may need a 50A service in the future, I'd install the 50A now, then just use a dog-bone. The 50/30/20 box, while nice, is probably overkill (IMO) - and doing something twice is always more work and money.

The price difference between installing a single pole 30A and double pole 50A breaker is probably under $20, then whatever the wire cost would be...

Trying to pull another wire through the conduit, or replacing the cable in the future, will both be a pain in the arse and a waste of money. I like to do things once, if at all possible, personally. The PDF in the second post is a great starting place, and covers the basics nicely, I believe...

No need, OntarioFireFighter did a good job of explaining one of the reasons you need not worry about your insurance. There are many others.

But by all means if you are legally required to get a licensed electrician in your municipality, pull permits, and have inspections to simply add a circuit do so. Also if you're not comfortable doing your own work, or knowledgeable and confident enough to do it, then don't. You can not make blanket statements that someones insurance will be void or they can't do their own electrical work.

It never fails in RV forums when someone mentions adding an RV receptacle, the electrical fear mongering and hearsay erupts. Its not unlike RV rear bumpers and bike racks. I'm out of this one. Merry Christmas.

i can tell you in the state of Tennessee the homeowner can run their own Electrical in a house they are building to occupy. as long as you pull the permit and have the inspections done. I know from experience as i have built and pulled and wired all the electrical in 3 houses in the part 10 years
by the way i have a 30 amp connection for the TT that i ran i think it is a great idea, if i want to escape to the camper for some reason i can cool it in the summer, heat it in the winter, and oh, it keeps my battery charged

WOW...didn't realize 30amp outlets, electricians and homeowner's insurance would spark such a lively "discussion". I guess the bottom line is to follow local code enforcement laws and talk to your insurance agent...my insurance agent confirmed what OntarioFireFighter stated in his post is correct...intent....
I myself would prefer to have a qualified electrical do the work...I know my limits around elec.

SO I trust raforan has his original question answered.

Ok, I installed my 30 Amp and I went with 30 AMP because I had to come out of a basement electrical box, thru a wall up a conduit inside of a closet, across the garage attic, down the wall in conduit and drill thru the outside wall where the box was mounted. With the 50 AMP cable it would have been a lot more expensive and getting the cable where it needed to go a lot harder due to the twists and turns.


My camper is 50 AMP but the 1 A/C unit stayed on in the heat of the summer with the residential refrigerator with no problem. We frequently camp at State Parks with 30 AMP service and do just fine.

This question has definitely cause alot of input and maybe a little fustration. Everyone has given me a wealth of knowledge in this aspect. I am try it for your self first person and when I hit a wall call in a pro (or call over a buddy who's a electrician and pay him with beer (after the fact)) . So I am going to try and tackle this mongol. Picking up supplies as I can (work schedule. Dw christmas shopping scared to look at the bank.) So Monday I'll go pull permits and get the ball rolling.
