Our rule.. if we camp in the state it gets a sticker. Hotels don't count nor does "passing thru".

My rule
We have to stay a couple of nights (doesn’t matter where) and engage in some activity (sample local restaurants, visit a state or national park, enjoy a local festival). In other words, we have to experience the state.
The other thing I have mounted is a wall map of the US and I trace our path with permanent marker and put a sticker everywhere we spent the night. I use a different color pen for each of our trips.
We have timed a trip through Forest City, Iowa for Puckerbrush days in July a year after we happened upon it the first time. Cute campground right we’re they set off the fireworks.

You don’t own an RV for day trips, so there should be a requirement to sleep in the Stare. Just saying.

Don’t have one don’t want one.
With that said how do you show going to a state more than once what’s the purpose of the map so others know where you have been or remind yourself where you have been.

The point is — there is no requirement. To each his own.

If you don’t have one you wouldn’t understand, but once conquered just enjoy the subsequent experiences. And I do it for fun and to encourage me to visit places I haven’t been.

So if I just drive past my parents' house I can say I visited?
And do you guys really have wives that could give two you know whats about this???
Here's how it goes with my wife. "Hey, I added another sticker!" Wife: "Oh, that's nice honey..." Me: "Um, what did I just say?" Wife: "Something about stickers. Have fun!"

+1
We've got a map in our kitchen with push pins in the places we've been to. One color for all of us, one for just DW and I, and others for individuals. Driving routes are in one color, train routes in another. That's an awesome map.

I can’t imagine why you’d need to spend MORE than one night to qualify, but as many have said by now, you can play by your own rules. I think we’ve slapped a sticker or two on for states we really just felt like passing through.

So true! We're currently planning our spring trip to . . . drumroll please . . . Iowa and Nebraska, because we need to add those two states to our map. The thing is, I know we'll have fun.
Oh, and our rule is spend the night and do the do -- because why not?

I don't have the map, so don't have the rules. I tend to lean toward the requirement to spend a night in the state, not just driving through. But, Wildcat Buckeye's policy sounds very reasonable to me, spend the night or participate in some activity in the state. If you stop and hike to a scenic overlook, or something similar, then continue on, I believe you've actually visited the state more than if you just spend the night in a commercial parking lot overnight. I like it!
Just my opinion of course.

We use our map for places the RV has been. If the wheels of the rig we are driving touched the pavement within state lines, we count it. Our list of states we've been to and where the RV has been are much different. We get a new map each time we change RV's. Your map, your rules!

There is no “rule!” You do whatever makes both of you happy. So if someone asks you where in Nebraska you visited, you say the “Loves truck stop”.... spent the night sleeping in the parking lot!
Happy Camping, and be careful out there!

There are only 2 or 3 states on our map that we have not spent the night in (drove thru on the way)....however, there are many, many more that we didn't add because we "only" tent camped in them years ago during our cross country honeymoon. Maybe we should add them because we did spend nights and did a lot of sight seeing.....we have more interesting stories to talk about doing that!
