If I was home all the time I would get a 10,000 watt generator and a transfer switch but we are gone a lot. This year when Hurricane Florence came we were home but normally we are not home at that time of the year. It not only cost right much for the install but it uses 40 gallons a day when running or there about. But when I told DW how much propane it cost to run she replied that it was worth every penny. The power was out five days and it was hot. We have a heat pump that is on year round. I’m installing gas logs plus a tankless hot water heater, I should save some money there. I wish I could find a five hundred gallon tank for sale, the LP is cheaper if you own your own tank. The generator I’m installing is a Generac 22kw, $8500.00. Not cheap but I have to hire as I’m no electrician. Plus if the unit has a problem they will fix it
