I got a solid hour of star gazing this evening till the clouds rolled in. We got real nice views of Saturn with clear ring views. Even though we couldn't see ring delineation it was still very cool. We also got good clear views of Jupiter. That was most definitely what we were seeing the other night. I have no idea why the app was telling me it was Pluto. So thank you guys for steering me in the correct direction. All I can think of that there was a clutch in the app when I punched in my location.

Ditto on not seeing colors. Everything looks mostly "gray scale* through a telescope.

The way it's been explained to me is not that the colors aren't there, they are. There's just not enough light to activate the color vision in the human eye.

Photography is more sensitive to the light available and multiple images are often "stacked" via a processing program in order to make the colors more vibrant and bring out more detail.

Seeing lines, details and moons of Jupiter makes much more sense than Pluto. If your initial fix was off, the program will be off. Along the lines of "garbage in, garbage out".

Apps and programs are helpful, but you need to learn the sky as well. I look at it as I would GPS in the car: as long as what it is telling me makes sense, I follow it. But I also look at maps before I go so I have a decent awareness of where it should be telling me where to turn. Same with star charts and programs: as long as what it's telling me makes sense, I will follow it.

If you wait until late fall / early winter when Orion comes out, you can check out M42 aka The Orion Nebula. It is probably the largest and brightest Nebula in the sky. If the sky is dark enough, you just might be able to resolve at least a little bit of color viewing through your scope.

Great thread!

I'm currently doing some research on a telescope to take camping. I am in a pop-up, so weight and portability are important. Always looking for suggestions if anyone has any!

I agree the Nightwatch book is good for beginners.

I was into amateur astronomy in high school. Had a 4.5" newt on an eq mount. sold it in college, and then this spring, ~20 yrs later, I got an 8" dob for my b-day. Been having a lot of fun with it. haven't taken it camping yet as the weather hasn't cooperated, but I've been scoping out places to set up as we visit camp grounds. Planning to take it on our 4-day trip to WV as we'll be in one of the darkest spots east of the Mississippi.

those are some good pictures above. I'd love to get into astro-photography, but for now my budget just allows me to look, and maybe a quick photo with the phone...

Those pictures are real easy to take and dont require a large investment. I use an inexpensive astro camera plus free software I downloaded off the web.

Would that work with a dob? Ie using video to stack images? Or would it need EQ/tracking for long exposure? If you can point me to a reasonable setup for a dob, that would be awesome! Thanks!!

Planets are bright enough that really short exposures are all you need. Just stack a bunch using a free online stacking program like autostakkert then you can sharpen it up using Photoshop. I cleaned up these pictures with a free program called Registax. There are tutorials on you tube that explain the process.

I use this one:

ZWO ASI185MC USB 3.0 Color Astronomy Camera - ASI185MC

If you have a DSLR, you can buy a mount for your scope and use it as well.

I want to move into some more deep sky photography but I really need to pick up a decent EQ mount first.
