Are propane tank covers supposed to be fastened in place?

My camper has two twenty lb propane bottles and a plastic cover that goes over both of them. I noticed that I can just lift the whole cover off, there is nothing that hold it in place. Is this the way it is supposed to be? What would keep the wind from blowing it off?

Our cover fits our two tanks snugly and its not attached. No worries that its going to blow off.

There should be three notches on the metal device that screws down to hold both tanks. What about putting it at their widest? That might move the tanks apart more to make a tighter fit with the cover.

If that doesn't work, I've seen trailers with a bungee cord holding the cover to the tray. It doesn't look very good but does the job.

Mine is the same way. I was wondering the same thing. I know it's pretty snug on there but you have to wonder if a strong wind comes through there if it wouldn't blow off.

Nothing to worry about, they will stay on. Have towed trailers with these covers since 1976 and have never had one blow off. If you are worried, drill a hole down low in front and back of the cover and hook a bungy cord in the front down under the holder and hook it in the rear. It is not neccessary, but to ease your minds.

I've seen a couple of them laying in the median next to the interstate over the years...

My cover has tabs front and back on the bottom edge. If yours doesn't, the drill will be your friend.

I have used both the hard plastic covers and the softer vinyl covers with a zippered top. Neither of them anchor to the camper, and I have not had any problems with having them blow off. And I have been camping since the late 80s early 90s. Think about it they fit pretty snuggly on the tanks themselves so it would be rather difficult for them to just blow off.

Same here. I asked the dealer before I drove off and he said they don't need to be secured and won't fly off when driving. I did however secure it with a bungee via the tabs just for piece of mind.

Never have, nor seen one blow off. My guess is those are there becuase someone stopped to "switch" tanks or were taken off for some other reason, and then forgotten to be put back on.

Ditto on the bungee between tabs. I don't think I need it, but better safe than sorry.

On our prior TT the plastic cover fit tight, but I wondered about it blowing off as I did see it happen to another TT that was on the highway ahead/next to us. Thing lifted right up and blew off, now maybe they did not have it down all the way or something since it did not draw my attention until it was going airborne as we passed them, but apparently they can come off.

To all that have stated they never have seen one fly off. Mine is currently on it's way to Canada via Lake Huron. We had 65mph winds saturday and unsecure cover blew right off. Trailer also moved 4-5 inches.

Use a bungee on the bottom to secure them. We had ours blow off during a windstorm in west Texas. Those who have not had this happen can only say “yet.”

Mine is not attached in any way and has not blown off in 4 years. yet. I like the convenience of being able to just pull it off if I want to get to more than the access door allows.

Drill two holes and attach a bungee cord and stop thinking about it.
