UPDATE

The latest news article I read reported officially 18 dead and 22 missing.

Two families camping together lost both husbands, 4 young boys and 1 young girl still missing. The two wives were the only ones to survive.

Except one of those battery powered S.A.M.E. weather radios touted in the sticky's at the top. Not a guarantee, but better than nothing.

Certainly a weather radio with a loud alert that would wake you up would at least give you a chance. One year while we were at Myrtle Beach the weather service issued tornado watches. We set our weather radio alert on. At about 3:00 am that thing fired off with a tornado warning. Luckily the tornado was several miles away inland and heading away from us, but at least we were awakened and could take action if necessary.

I saw on another thread that the (maybe some?) Concertone has weather radio.

I have the ZX-700 and was wondering if all you need is the thing turned on for it to work or does it have to be on a certain channel?

Any help here would be appreciated as a quick scan of the paperwork was less than enlightening.

Our prayers go out to the families of the deceased and missing as well. It pays to have some type of plan, whether it's a radio or keeping an eye on the TV weather broadcasts. Mother Nature is very unpredictable. Be Safe!

I'm not sure a weather radio would have helped those folks. I read that area is very remote, lots of canyons and tall trees, cell service is spotty at best so maybe they could have got a warning, maybe not. It's also a primative camping area, mostly tent campers, some cabins and a few rv's.

The weather service did put a warning out but apparently the campers never received the warning. The waters rose as much as 8' per hour and were estimated at 25' when they peaked. All this happened somewhere around 3 and 4 am.

I have a weather radio with battery back up. I will definitely have it with me whenever I camp from now on.
