Bad camper fire this past weekend
At a GNCC race in the Carolina's.
Warning: bad language in video.
From what I was told, fuel tanks for the bikes or quads was too close to a camp fire:

I never did see any fire equipment. I take it that this was a race sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Assn. I would have thought there would be fire equipment close by. Regardless that was on heck of a blaze.

I would have moved mine long before it ruined the siding on it. People have never been near a hot fire I guess.

After watching this it makes wonder about parking in campgrounds where there is only 10 feet or so between TT's and MH's when slides are extended.

Good point, and some are even closer than that. I guess the lesson is to always have an emergency relocation plan in mind.

Probably was during the race. Probably and rural area with volunteer fire and ambulance service.

We try to avoid campgrounds that have you parking so close to your neighbor's trailer but have been in one situation where we couldn't completely deploy our awning because the trailer next to us was too close.
As long as no one gets hurt, I can deal with my insurance company for any property loses.

The AMA only requires EMS and even at that, only during the race. GNCC races are typically held in the middle of nowhere, so any fire response would be from a distance.
This is indeed a hazard at any campground. Unknown quality of campground electrical system, unknown quality/ condition of other trailers and open fires are just a few hazards.
The same household common sense rules of fire safety apply to camping;
Have an exit/ escape plan (and practice it)
Designate a rally point to meet at for a head count
Once you're out, stay out
Know the emergency phone numbers (it may not be 911 in all locations)
Know where you do and do not have a cell signal
Also, if moving your rig during something like this, be very careful not to run anyone over. People will be running all over the place.

And make sure your fire extinguisher has not been recalled and is in good, working order!

In my younger years I used to join a bunch of friends to ride twice a year in a 100 mile desert endure. Out in the middle of nowhere as you said. We always parked the trailer in a spot that was inhospitable to nearby trailers (large rocks etc.).
Our biggest fear was any nearby campfire where the phrase "hey, watch this" was frequently in use. One evening a couple of inebriated fools were throwing full paint spray cans into the campfire. Cooler heads prevailed and both the spray cans AND their booze was taken from them.
As for RV fire extinguishers, at best they are only good for burning grease on a stove. With the fire in the video no regular extinguisher would have helped, even if all the extinguishers in the camp were deployed at the same time.

x 2. In 40 years of camping the only time we have been in that close proximity was when we went to the International Rally in Goshen. Thankfully there were no open fires.

Hate to say it, protect yourself, check your neighbors toy hauler or ask if his has the gas tank/pump feature, I for one would ask for a different sight further away. Most of the time you/we can see an accident(?) waiting to happen.

I wonder if the insurance company told them, "OK, we'll all off the RV, but you got to get all that dirt off of it".

Do you not park beside class A’s, B’s or C’s. All of them have a gas tank also. To group all toyhauler owners into a group of unsafe people is quite discriminating!!!!
If you changed sites because any unit beside you had a gas tank you will be hard pressed to find one.

If you don’t want to camp like sardines in a can the don’t ever park at Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone. If a camper was to catch on fire in that campground you had better have good insurance cause there is no way you could move campers out fast.

Good thing the wind wasn't blowing! There would have been a lot more rigs burned up.
