Bad day

A friend was returning from vacation this past weekend They have a 2 year old 5er, well about 100 miles into the trip home one of the china bombs blew out, 1 1/2 hours later they are on the road again this was on sunday so big $$, 20 miles later another bomb, another 1 1/2 later on the road again 100 miles later another bomb. the china bombs cost them 4 1/2 hours and $900.00. lucky for them the only had minor damage to 5er. And they replaced the tires with Goodyear endurance.

Glad it was only minor damage, some are not so lucky. Also, happy to see they did't just keep putting on worse over bad tires. Good luck with the Endurance, they're a new GY product so time will tell.

I wonder how old the tires were. I also wonder if the camper was overloaded or how fast were they going. Did your friend have TPMS on the tires?

When our's blew, we contacted our insurance ( had pretty good damage to TT ). They recommended replacing ALL the tires right away. Said in their experience, once one goes, the others are probably just about to. They've all been going through the same travel conditions.

many have posted that compared with other tires off the rim, the Endurance tires are heavier and stiffer, a good sign that they are better built tires. I think time will be kind to them...

Also wonder if all the tires were inflated to the proper pressure.

A lot of things to take into account here:
1. How old were the tires? (not the 5er, the tires)
2. What was the load rating of the tires?
3. What was the loaded weight of the 5er? (see question #2)
4. Tire speed rating vs. actual speed?

What your friend encountered is all too common. More likely than not the MFGR has equipped the rig with the minimum load range tires based on the mythical advertised weight of the rig. Then the owner will load the rig with all the goodies and extras. You would be surprised at what all the extras add up to. When the first tire goes, all the weight on that side is shifted to the good tire, and it is instantly overloaded. Yes, it's going fail, too. It's no secret that many rigs out there are overloaded for their tires, and owners will actually disregard the speed ratings of their tires. I wish I had a nickel for every time someone has said to me, "my turbo diesel will pull this thing at 80 mph, no problem".

As far as the new Goodyear Endurance tires go, too early to tell. Thus far there is no empirical evidence that this tire is the "silver bullet". Only time will tell. Right now, Goodyear is running a consumer funded tire test. In another year, or two we'll have decent data on these tires. If they live up to their claims you'll probably be able to buy them at Walmart for 25% less then they're selling for now. As with any tire, you overload it, abuse it or neglect it, it's going to come apart and blow.

My thoughts exactly. Air pressure, Speed, and age of tire has a lot to do with this. If you park your RV outside in the sun, tires dry rot after 3-5 years.

I have had many RV's pass me on freeways doing 75-80 MPH and wonder just how long it will be before disaster strikes.
