Brake controller

I have a 2009 F150 that I bought used, it came with a TAP Impulse electronic brake controller.

Is this a good controller? I hate to spend more $$ on a new one when this one isn't that old and I am thinking it well work just fine....

any thoughts?

I think that is a time delay controller. Not a good idea if so. A model that uses an accelerometer would be better.

If the Tap Impulse is indeed a time delay unit, that is exactly what it does. You set the brakes to maximum power that you want, then set the time to ramp up to that maximum. If you set the maximum power too high, and the time delay for short period, then anytime you want to gently slow down, it ain't a gonna happen.....you could slide the trailer wheels in a second or 2. On the other side, if you set the delay too long, then you won't have instant brakes in an emergency situation.

I have the Valley Odyssey. The Tekonsha Prodigies are probably the most popular on this site. Mine works great, as those owning the Prodgies claim, also.

can the P3 be mounted any direction or does it have to be flat/paralle to the floor? My Tap was mounted along the trim that is angled below the steering wheel.

Lightbulb

Mounting orientation diagram for the P3. It has to be flat side to side & in line w/ the vehicle's centreline. It automatically finds the correct level setting. It also adjusts when travelling uphill & downhill.

I don't like the fact the lever is under the Prodigy. Had to find in a hurry. I prefer the slide at the front type of units.

That's where ours is on our 09 Ford. Right where your shin hits it while driving. I would love to move it, but have no idea where.

I've removed it from my truck as I'm trading it in today. On my Chev, I just made a bracket that was mounted to the dash just right of my right knee.

I mounted the prodigy just above the heater box in the center of the vehicle. Works great.
