Bridge & Overpass Height.

Hey Guys!

Does anyone know if there is an App or a Book for RV'ers regarding Low Clearance Bridges & Overpasses?

Might be a dumb question but I'm not finding much on it especially for the New England Area!

Heading to the Berkshires on Friday!
Rig is 10'9

233RBS

Thanks,

Rhody

The Truckers Atlas by Rand McNally is what we used. We did find one low overhead clearance overpass that wasn't listed. Just happened to be the one I needed to go under. Other than that, I didn't find any other discrepancies.

Additionally, always use a fudge factor when using the posted height of a bridge. Those posted numbers are the height of the bridge when it was built. What affects this is the number of times the roadway under the bridge has been recovered since then. I subtract 6" from those posted numbers.

Maybe... I have it and it doesn't do exactly what you might think.

It merely adds a warning (beep & icon) when you get close (user select distance/height) to a low point. It doesn't reroute you when selecting routes (in advance) as you might think it does.

Still, better than nothing.

If the stated height is 6" or less above my trailer height, I'll go around.

Good Sam trip planer will show you roads with caution signs if you pick a bad route.

Garmin RV760LMT - Allows for RV input specifications (height, width, length & weight) and will route you around narrow roads, low overpasses, and weight restricted roads.

NOTE: Make sure your map database is up to date, and it is always a good idea to sanity check routes with the Rand McNally Truckers Atlas.

X2 on the Garmin. We have been across the country and it has never missed. You can also program it to route around toll roads and it gives you directions 1 mile in advance to allow you time to get in the proper lane with your camper.

If you use your Garmin after you unhook the RV make sure you switch it to the car mode. It has taken me a 5 mile detour when a U-turn would work. It thinks the RV is behind and the shortest isn't way isn't possible.

It's not a bad idea to give yourself some extra room but bridge height postings are looked after very closely by DOT and other transportation authorities. They need to stay accurate to be safe for everyone. They actually usually have more clearance than advertised but never take that for granted as some are exact.

Turn it off and back on. One of the start up options asks car or RV. That's it!

Just did it the other night. DW searched out a Joann Fabric where I knew it was. The GPS sent her back to a freeway and around about 4 miles further.
