Calgon.... powder or liquid??
Ok,
I have read the geo method and have begun to search for calgon water softener in poweder form. I have read on hear that many of you have found the liquid version.
Can the liquid version be used with equal results? Is it simply that the powder form disolves completely making a good mixture when pouring into tanks, where liquid takes more work to ready a mix?

I have only used the liquid Calgon Softener.
I shamelessly buy up all but one when I find it.
I have never found the "powder" version.
Are you sure its not Calgon Laundry soap?

We have found the Calgon powder. It is not soap, but softener. We're actually running pretty low on it. Sorry Katz...can't answer your question. I never really thought about it. But you would think the liquid would be better as there is nothing to dissolve.

All,
I just tired the powder. Mixed it a few days ago with hot water then let it set to cool. It did not need that long to cool. The trailer was at the RV lot until yesterday. I mixed it one cup to a gallon. It is the first outing that we are using it, so will have to wait to see. One thing I noticed after pouring it into my tank was my meter read full until this morning. I know the tank was only a couple of gallons full. Hauling up to Gettysburg tonight, so I will see how it does. Later,

It may be that internet sources are your only option.

In any of the stores in New England that I was in that had it, Hannaford, Shaw's, Market Basket & Wally Mart, they only had it in the liquid form.

Laundry area, usually on the very bottom shelf. Make sure its the WATER softener; not fabric softener. The chemicals are very different and the fabric softener does not do the job.

To answer the OP's question, and this is straight from the website of Charles Bruni (the inventor of the Geo Method), no, it's not important if it's powdered or liquid Calgon. Charles Bruni states that he uses the powdered softener because it's cheaper by volume and weighs less by volume:
Quote:
Liquid water softener, liquid laundry detergent, and liquid diswashing detergent all work too. The key points are water softener and detergent. I prefer powder because it's cheaper by volume and weighs less by volume. I have plenty of cheap water on hand to hydrate it and pitch it down the commode and drains.
|
He really explains the process in detail on his home page.
There's also very good information on his blog that goes all the way back to 2005:
The Geo Method
Somebody made an entry in the blog about if it matters what kind (brand) of water softener is used and he claims that using a "non-precipitating" softener works the best with the Geo Method.
The brands not to use: Arm and Hammer Washing Soda, Raindrops, Blue Dew, Borax, Climalene, Melo, White King Water Softener, and Borateem.
The brand you SHOULD be using: Calgon (a mixture of non-precipitating and precipitating chemicals), White Rain, Blue Raindrops, and Spring Rain.
That information can be found toward the middle of the page of the link above titled The Geo Method.
