Aren't we lucky we have so many tools at our disposal to make decisions about where we are going to stay. I remember the days of the AAA books, and the Good Sam catalogues with small print and details of all the potential camping options in an area, along with a Rand McNally atlas to get us there. You kind of just flew by the seat of your pants and sometimes you got lucky, and sometimes you didn't. Were not any fall backs in those days like WalMart either. Always hated the big states like Colorado that had a fold in the middle of the state, or worse yet Texas that was on 4 pages. Not sure I could even read a Good Sam campground book these days, especially going down the road.

Also, be wary of reviews that say, "Best campground ever" and visa versa, "worst ever."

What's "best" and "worst" for us usually differs from others, sometimes only slightly. Year after year of going through parks nothing really surprises me anymore. Yes, ALL sites are closer than stated on a website, except some state parks. When I review a site I try to be as impartial as possible with management. Rarely do I mention them. When I have I often see later reviews with some of the same compliments / complaints.

There's no way I could run a campground, I'd be a militaristic butt-head. "Hey! you gonna pick up that towel!" "Slow down to 2 mph, this ain't no racetrack!"

Rare all 850 or so sites look empty like this...... yes a parking lot but, us and our 40,000 closest friends are often there........... over all most campers are great you on a rare occasion run into an inconsiderate person ............................. of course in season they have over 300 employees............

I usually toss out the high and the low, and focus on the other reviews.

That first image reminds me of Ocean Lakes campground in Myrtle Beach. Although I don't think Ocean Lake would ever be that empty.

Ah, a hurricane emptied the park, that makes sense. I loved Ocean Lakes the few times we stayed there. Too many years have passed since we’ve been there.

Our first fifth wheel had an external hookup for a telephone and back then the power pedestals at Ocean Lakes had a telephone connection. I was able to connect my computer to that phone line and have Internet at our site. A telephone land line connection for Internet? Sounds ancient doesn’t it?

Yea a little different now the owners the "Jackson's" have passed away. But now their 5 daughters are running their companies. There is a water park for the kids not great to be camped near it for the noise. Nicer in the off seasons.
The other bad is the park was built when a huge camper was 30 feet long, most were much shorter ........

Exactly, that's the great thing about this life.

Plus the more people that are at the mega parks, that just means more room at the state park for me

I never use Google earth. pic can also be deceiving. We read the reviews check web sites and choose. Have not ran into a bad one yet. I do not need the fancy type camp grounds. Later RJD

Exactly. There are campgrounds for those who like excitement, for those who like peace and quiet and even for those who prefer clothing optional.

It's great to have a wide range of choices. If a campground doesn't suit my needs I just go to one that does.

I like Ocean Lakes in the off season, lots of great places to eat at. About to finish this 14,000 mile trip, we have stayed in a lot of campgrounds, some good, some not so good. None real bad, a few really great. We just like water, 50amp and sewer and hopefully cable, we didn't get that at every campground.
