Camping on Mississippi River?

I'd like to camp beside the Mississippi River in a spot where you can sit and watch the boats and barges go by. Anyone know of such a place?

Absolutely, Tom Sawyer Campground in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Also in the town of Canton, MO there is a city campground right on the river. There is a lock and dam right there. I've never stayed there but I have driven through it. I don't think it gets much barge traffic though.

This is about as close as you can get without getting wet.

LittleRock Downtown Riverside RV park, right on the river, with a pedestrian bridge spanning the river right next door...

Warfield Point Park, Greenville, MS...

Riverview RV Park and Resort, Vidalia, LA...

etc,etc... (google maps overview search)

Hi,

There are numerous great Corps of Engineer parks alongside the river in Illinois and Iowa, and perhaps other states as well. The ones we have stayed at were well maintained facilities at a decent price.

Hope this helps.

Tom Sawyer

I will echo Tom Sawyer. From Georgia, it is not that bad of trip. The views are wonderful. We were there last May and picked blackberries for breakfast on the banks of the Mississippi that we saw while sitting on benches drinking our morning coffee.

X2 on Tom Sawyer. Reserve in the NEW section area with concrete pads and closest to the river. Any closer and you will be in the water! Excellent campground, free laundromat.

One caution. A Line-Boat generates a fair amount of noise, and the pilots have miniature captive suns that they use as searchlights. They like to look at the goings-on on the banks just as much as the people on the banks like to look at them. That means at 3 AM, you can be woken up thinking the police has a helicopter spotlighting your camper.

The noise is not as obnoxious as a train, but it can wake you up if you are a light sleeper.

If you want to watch barges and boats you don't have to go to the Mississippi River. My favorite campground for that is Service Park, Silas, AL, actually closer to Coffeeville, AL. It is a well kept CoE campground on the Tombigbee River. There are about 11 pull through sites right on the riverbank. Quite a bit of barge traffic as well as pleasure boats, sailboats (under power), and at certain times of the year large yachts moving from the Gulf to the Tennessee River. The river is not nearly as wide as the Mississippi so you are much closer to the boats passing by. Downside is not near any shopping. Closest restaurant 10 miles away. Coffeeville is 3 miles with limited food. Thomasville is about 30 miles with shopping, food and restaurants. OTA tv is almost non existent. There are walking trails. Watch out for any alligators in the river, haven't ever seen any but have been warned by camp hosts about them. As one fellow camper said, "This is the best place to be to do nothing".

At Canton, MO there is a small city owned campground on the bank of the Mississippi just down fron the Lock and Dam. Very interesting to watch the river traffic.

Lots of boat traffic in the New Orleans/Baton Rouge area although I wasn't a camper when I lived there so not familiar with the campgrounds.
