Camping. The ugly and the good
Friday evening we get the camper ready to head to a favorite camp ground that is near by. We get 20 miles down the road pulling our 39ft vengeance with our Chevy dually, when the truck starts to vibrate. Before I could slow down both tires on right rear come off. I was able get slowed down and pulled over while still maintaining control. Called the police to help direct traffic so we could find the tires, only found one. My wife got a ride back to our house to grab our other pickup that we used to pull camper with. Got camper hooked to the other truck and after 3 hours along side the road we decide to head home for the night. Before we went to bed I told the wife that as soon as we got a tow truck for the other pick we were still going to go camping. Made it to our camping spot a day late but still enjoyed the rest of the weekend

Now I know why my brother won't go camping more than 20 miles from home.

My guess is the lug nuts came loose. And when the started to wobble the 2600lb pin weight didn't help matters any

I never owned a pick up truck, let alone a dually one ton.
How many lug nuts are there to attach the wheels on a dually?
All of them came loose? Sounds kinda strange to me.

This appears to be a growing problem. You are the 5th, that's right 5th incident where wheel with tire has been loose and caused issues. The other 4 had recently had work done and the determination is that the repair service has not tightened the nuts down properly. This may be a response to complaints about the use of air tools that then prevent you from changing the tire by hand when you get a flat on the road.
There has got to be a happy medium I would think, but now we NEVER drive away from a shop without checking the nuts for manual tightness. We also check them when we do a tire pressure check seasonally.
Glad you were able to get'er stopped.

My F350 dually has 165 foot lb. torque requirement and my torque wrench only goes to 150, but at least it's close to spec. Check them every 4 month. 5th also.

I have made it a habit to torque the lugs on the trailer before each trip but I think I will check the truck more often. Hope your truck wasn't damaged too bad when the wheels came off.

Whew! May add 'check lug nuts' to DH's pre-camping checklist.

It was to badly damaged. Wheels studs backing plate and I think they are replacing the rotor. And a dent in the fender

It gives "checking my nuts" a whole different importance.
What?
The LUG NUTS of course...jeez...
I check my TT torque before each trip already, I am adding the dually wheels to the list. And for the XXx time, very glad you were not injured!

I had a similar tire problem over the weekend. Fortunately I didn't lose both tires like you did. My outside rear dual tire went flat 25 miles from home and all tire shops were closed for the evening. The tow truck driver Sat night and the tire shop yesterday both had a hell of a time removing and then putting back the spare underneath the rear of my Solera with it's Sprinter chassis. The tire shop said it was just about the most difficult and complex spare that he has seen( and he's been around for a long time.) I'm curious how others have dealt with this problem?? There is NO WAY that I could have put on the spare by myself.

MAN that could have ended VERY badly
Glad you guys are dyed in the wool RVers and salvaged the weekend though!
If you ever find out what went wrong .. please let us know - can't imagine all 6 lug nuts failing all at once!
