Thumbs down Camping with G.S.

Anyone camp with a Good Sams Club chapter? We never see this discussed on any of the forums. There are several chapters in our area but we don't know the folks involved. It seems they camp once a month for three or four days at various area campgrounds. One specializes in golf, (not our interest) another group eats together and visits places of interest. I think we like the concept, but don't know what we might be getting into!?

We went to our local chapter meeting one time. While the people were friendly enough, they were all well past retirement and had plenty of time to camp. They required members of the chapter to camp at least twice a month during the season from March to October with the trips lasting Thursday to Sunday, attend at least one GS rally a year, and attend most monthly meetings. They did not seem to have a provision for coming in on Friday nights and leaving on Sunday. Somehow they had forgotten the concept that many people actually work five days a week.

At the present time in our lives we are lucky to camp twice a year much less twice a month. Plus, while we are not spring chickens, all of those folks could have been our parents or in some cases, grand parents. There is nothing wrong with that except we had nothing in common with them. We decided it was not for us at this time. Perhaps when we reach that age we can then join and participate.

Hi Kim,
We are retired and have time, but twice a month is too much of a good thing! We are told the groups in our area camp once a month (some all year and some quit for summer or the winter), even that seems a little much. We would not like to be compelled to be anywhere at any time. Good questions to ask before we participate. Thanks for the info.
