Car Generator

Does anyone own one these or seen one work? Seems like a lot of money for such low power output.

All the CarGenerator models share the same specifications as follows:

  • Provides 2000 watts continuous, 4000 watts surge standard household AC power
  • Pure Sine wave commercial grade inverter, 60 Hz, approx. 8-10amp output
  • Runtime with standard vehicle: 50-80 hours continuous
  • High efficiency power conversion >90% efficient.
  • Low harmonic distortion and no static or humming noise
  • Can safely run tools, air pumps, small motors, furnace blower motors, refrigerators that a cheaper modified sine wave inverter cannot
  • Weatherproof yet fully ventilated casing, Rainproof, Snow, Ice
  • Integrated high temperature engine-safe jumper-style cables, length 7ft TPE cable jacket for extra heat resistance and oil grease etc
  • Jumper cables professionally manufactured in USA by EastPenn/DEKA Solid strand copper 4awg cables over-engineered to carry full current safely
  • Computer regulated overload safety protection with LED light and audible alarm
  • Short-circuit shutdown protection for electronic equipment CSA, UL, ETL listed certified High-speed ventilation fan to keep inverter running at a safe temperature
  • Includes two 110-volt AC outlets Includes a separate digital Watt meter to display load of your appliances and loads.
  • Integrated 12v LED voltmeter on front of the unit, to ensure users stay above 13.3volts and within alternator capacity
  • Built in rubber pad to prevent scratching of front of vehicle Built in adjustable strap to fit most vehicles and adjust to different situations
  • Integrated carry handle provides heat ventilation output, carrying handle, and security lock point to secure with a standard cable lock if desired

After looking at the site, I wonder if the guy who ran his car in the garage is still around!

There was a discussion about this in another thread yesterday.

Way too much money and false claims.
(like run the furnace and heat your entire house on 200-300w)

Seems like a waste of time and money. How do you use your car when you need power? No thanks my old Honda standby generator work great for the house and my 2 yamaha's do the job boondocking.

CarGenerator looks like a new marketing spin on a device that’s already widely available, a 12 volt powered inverter that supplies 120 volts AC. Besides that, it’s ugly.

I would much prefer a hardwired inverter installed with lugs to one with alligator clips clamped to battery posts. If I wanted to use this idea, I would just go buy an inverter and install it permanently in my car or truck. It would be ready to use at any time.

By the way, did you see the idiot guy in the CarGenerator promotional video that suggested making the negative cable connection right at the battery post which then created a big spark? Does anyone else see the potential here for a hydrogen gas explosion? I can see why he handed the cable to the woman and let her do it while he backed away!!!

Well the 10 amps would limit you on how much or what you actually could use even more then the watts, correct ?

some trucks are now coming WITH an inverter and 120v outlets... and although the 'idea' of a simple-to-use 'car generator' is appealing to a few, there is nothing 'new' or 'proprietary' about this product - it's simply an INVERTER anyone can purchase off-the-shelf at wmt or any auto parts store. No matter, it's NOT going to power your heater or furnace or equipment that requires 240v power, and NOT going to power your equipment and appliances that are 'hardwired' into your home.... only those items you can reach to it with extension cords.

if an inverter with a convenient 'carry case' is on your bucket list - get one, otherwise just use an inverter like everyone else does, for a lot less.

Good catch. The math in the specifications simply does not compute correctly unless the output was around 200-240 volts. A 2000 watt inverter sine wave output at 120 VAC would need to be around 16.7 amps.

Perhaps there are two outlets and a separate inverter for each outlet?

Quoting the specs from post #1:

  • Provides 2000 watts continuous, 4000 watts surge standard household AC power
  • Pure Sine wave commercial grade inverter, 60 Hz, approx. 8-10amp output

And the current draw from the battery would be around 175 amps. More than enough to severely overheat an alternator being turned by an idling engine.

Just another bad idea that someone is trying to convince people it's the answer to their power problem.

Might be OK for "Tailgating" when you need that big screen TV and massive sound system to run on the back of your truck.
