Carrying a 5 gallons gas can

Okay guys I didn't know where to put this but we are planning on the long trip to Las Vegas this September and I would like to carry at least a 5 gals gas can but want to be safe doing so.

I will be carrying it in the back of my enclose pickup, so is it a good ideal to do, thank you for your reply?

If you have some window open on the canopy, you should be ok.

Did it all the time, make sure it is in a crate or tied to prevent spillage.

Enclosed pickup? Bed cover, camper shell, any venting? Not good to carry gas cans in an enclosed area with no venting. Ever see those plastic containers swell up in the heat? .

I carry fuel cans all the time, but in an open pickup bed.

Secure it in the bed so it can't turn over. Rope, straps, whatever.

If you want to limit your risk, and the gas is for a generator, take an empty can. Fill it when you are near your destination. If is for the TV don't fill it until you get to where you are concerned about the availability of gas stations. If the TV will be parked in a hot / sunny place, I would remove the can to prevent fume buildup in the cap.

Ditto, we store the 5 gal in the truck bed secured and there is plenty of ventilation. We also use google maps and figure out where fuel stops are and plan a trip accordingly.

Make sure you're using a NON-VENTED container. That way, NO gas vapors are escaping until YOU open the container (which you do OUTSIDE).

Guess you don't live where it gets hot. Down here it would vent one way or the other. Metal or plastic.

I use a 5-gallon jerry can like this and carry it in the bed of my TV. BTW, be careful with any gas can (plastic or metal) where the spout is stored upside down under the cap -- heat will cause pressure build up and when you open the cap, gasoline will be pushed out of the spout and spill all over. I suggest not storing the spout inside these containers.

Yes, gas containers will swell but, I've been in the Nevada desert in August. Once a day, I took the 5-gallon plastic gas containers out of my vehicle and filled my Honda 3KW thereby dissipating the gaseous fumes. The fuller the containers were, the less vaporization there'd be.
