chase of stolen rv
Not quite sure where to put this, but this guy driving a stolen rv has a tremendous amount of luck avoiding obstacles. He's driving with the slide out and basically wrecks it.

Hard to imagine how stupid and un-coordinated the police action was. Whoever was in command should be fired. Don't they train for this type of scenario? Don't they have strategies for stopping the pursued vehicle?

Please tell us how you would stop a large motorhome. Curious minds would like to know.

I could not get the video to load BUT, in answer to your question ( Don't they train for this type of scenario?) the answer is generally NO. 1: training is EXPENSIVE. Many (most) agencies simply do NOT have the funds to train as much as they should or would like to. 2: TOO MANY variables. An agency might train for incidents "A", "B", and "C" but then face incident "X"which bears little (if any) resemblance to the training they received. LEOs often have to take their "best guess" as where to respond in order to get ahead of the fleeing vehicle (if the LEO is behind the target vehicle, (s)he is basically following the suspect hoping said subject will screw up allowing for capture. 3: Reading current news outlets, more and more agencies are implementing "Do NOT Pursue" policies; something that many individual LEOs are averse to (they DO want to nab the bad guy!). 4: damage a LEO's cruiser and go right to the top of your agency's list. 5: When LEOs pursue and, an "innocent" is somehow injured (even if it's the fault of said "innocent"), lots of "Monday Morning Quarterbacks" scream: "why was there a pursuit?" More and more, the downsides of pursuing outweigh the upside. I know this answer will probably NOT be what you want to hear BUT, in today's HIGHLY litigious society, it has become the way of life.

Works with a Sherman tank if you can go fast enough.

They must have had every cruiser on the force just FOLLOWING him like a fool's parade. Instead, maybe follow with a couple cruisers while tracking with a helicopter, and direct the rest of the cruisers ahead to limit his options. One thing is certain - you cannot stop a motorhome by ramming aft of the rear wheels like that one guy did.
It's scary that crazy creeps like this are on the rise.

I believe they did and that's what happened the the Left Side tires.
From a few chases I've watched on TV that occurred in LA it seems like many are stopped when traffic builds up behind red lights.
Many PD's have signaling devices on their patrol cars that are activated when the emergency lights are on that cause traffic controls to make lights green for them, stopping all cross traffic.
Sometimes a good old fashioned traffic jam can stop a chase.
As an alternative, a couple loaded dump trucks parked in intersections ahead of the chase could work too. Recently the city I live in used their snow plows to block intersections, but then again, that was for a parade.
As for chasing in general, here in our State it's pretty much a thing of the past thanks to recent legislation. The result is that many don't stop for police anymore but that's for another discussion in a different place.

Law enforcement merely tracks the vehicle via satellite.
Makes chases boring.

Enjoyed the Chase
I got a great laugh out of the pursuit, and it brought back memories of some of my experiences as a LEO for 35 years. When I started you could run the wheels off the car to catch the offender, now days most agencies have very strict policy on when and when not to pursue due to liability issues. It would be interesting to know the full details of the offence and the involved agencies policies. And for the Monday Morning quarterbacks who see their pursuits on TV...for most agencies it starts with the offender, the pursuing officer and ends maybe with a back-up and supervisor...no air support or units equipped to PIT. Ohio State Police did a good job overall. I wonder how many agency vehicles had to go into the shop for realignments, suspension inspections, body work or to at least dig the mud out of the body of the vehicle. OH, the memories!!!

I've always wondered what would happen if you drove a distance with the slide out. He managed not to hit anything with the slide. Plenty of lean to the driver side.
