Columbus Ohio to OC Maryland?

Leaving Saturday for the beach towing a 26DBH with a Tundra.

Experiences going through the PA turnpike or traveling Rt. 69 through Western Maryland?

Thanks.

What is the route you plan to take? I just came the opposite direction and might be able to give you some info
We came 68 to 79 then 70 towards Colunbus

I think you mean I-68 in Maryland not 69?

Either the PA turnpike or I-68 are good 4 lane roads.
The turnpike charges of course so take that into consideration.

Neither have mountains that are too severe. They are interstate roads after all.
Both have construction going on but it is that time of year.

What exactly are you looking for?
We travel both often.

My choice would be 70 to 79 to 68 picking 70 back up where 68 meets it. Then 70 to 695 using the east side below Baltimore then onto 97 until 50 across the Bay Bridge then just follow 50 right to OC.

Now on 79 right when you enter West Va. there is road work down to one lane and they put you over on the shoulder, take your time, last a few miles. 68 has some hills on it and so does 70 but not bad. You will probably hit slow downs near any of the major towns and possibly at the toll booths for the Bay bridge and along 50 as Sat is usually a day the beach rentals change so everyone heads down.

Where are you staying? If Frontier Town or Castaways there is a great bbq place on the road the campgrounds are on, just look for the crowd

We lived in Southern Maryland before going full time RV and since wife's family is in and around Columbus/Springfield, we've made that trip many times, both towing an RV and in various other vehicles.

I much prefer I-68 to the PA Turnpike, so from Columbus we'd take 70 to Washington, PA (to bypass Wheeling or not is a tossup), 79 to Morgantown, 68 to Hancock and then 70 to Frederick. Then 270 on into the Capital Beltway, which I surely would avoid if I could figure out a way to do so. So, if you are going to OC, you might want to do that (avoid the Capital Beltway) by taking 70 on nearer to Baltimore.

Toll Plazas

Just take note that the Toll Plazas on the PA turnpike, do not have regular gasoline if you exit to the toll plaza using the truck/trailer route. They only service diesel. You have to utilize the car route to get regular gas...it can get tricky.

I live just across the PA line from I68 and have run it between Morgantown, WV and Hancock, MD many times. I've also run the PA Turnpike many times over the mountains. Both roads are good to travel but coming over the mountains in WV, MD or PA you will find the grades on the Turnpike are more gradual than the ones on 68. While the grades on 68 are steeper it is a good alternative to paying toll for the Turnpike, just allow a little extra time for the mountains.

When we got to OC we take rt 32 out of Sykesville Md, it meets back up with 97 that bypasses the beltway by Baltimore, on the map it says West Friendship now, maybe they changed the name, it's been a couple years since we've been there.
