Speaking of communications in the wild...and off-topic if this is truly a ham radio thread. I had wanted a simple emergency GPS locator in case I had ever had any problems in remote areas. You push the button, an emergency signal is sent to a satellite, and local authorities / Search and Rescue Teams are notified. My wife knew I was too cheap to buy one, so she did it for me. And she bought one with all of the bells and whistles, the Delorme Inreach tracker. It has GPS AND the ability to satellite text. Recently I was camping at Saddlebag Lake at 10,600' adjacent to Yosemite National Park. A snowstorm had moved in, and me and some buds were stranded for about 18 hours...not that we wanted to go anywhere anyway. We were far out of cell phone coverage, but were able to communicate to the outside world via text by satellite. Pretty cool! The basic service I have costs $12.00 per month and includes 10 texts per month. After that, it's .10 per text.
