Dealer quoted full MSRP. What should I do ?

I asked my closest dealer (which is over an hour away) for a quote on an in-stock Puma travel trailer (30QDB). They quoted me full retail MSRP. Of course they "hid" by telling me they were giving me $10K for my trade, when I know the NADA value is only $7700.

So when I read it (e-mail), I'm really pissed.

Now the question. Do all dealers quote MSRP at first ? Should I reply that I can get the trailer for $10K less at RV Wholesalers ? Should I reply with what "I think" is a fair price (2K above RVW) ?

Right now I'm so pissed that I'm temped to just forget about them if that is how they treat customers.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks, Bean

send them email telling them what you are willing to pay after trade.

Yep, make sure you get an out the door price. Sounds like they would pile on the extra fees to recoup some of their money.

I wouldn't reply anything. Take a drive, take a very close look at the trailer and then talk turkey face to face if you are interested.

I had an almost similar experience when dealing with the dealer closest to me. I don't enjoy the negotiation process, at all. In fact, I generally approach things with - "here's what I'll pay, take it or leave it" and state my actual willing amount. I try to be fair both ways (to them and to me).

I had one dealer who wasn't willing to come down by $2k. I knew they could make money and it was a fair deal as I'd gotten the same price from 2 other non-"internet wholesale" dealers. I ended up walking away from the deal because as my wife and I talked, if they were going to be that hard-pressed to meet me 1/2 way, what would support after the sale be like. Turns out they finally agreed to come down the $2k, but I had already verbally agreed with another dealer that they were getting the deal.

It's a shame. They would have been hellishly more convenient to go back for warranty work for.

I assume "pissed" is the trigger. Different folks have different levels of tolerance for colorful words. Many years ago, I wanted to put "Brain Tumors SUCK" on a t-shirt. I got a very tender email from one mother who said she'd never wear a shirt with a curse word on it.

It made me realize that we all have different levels of what is acceptable.

Now, let's move on...

I would definately go there and negotiate based on the price from RV Wholesalers. I've learned over the years that RV dealerships offer "RV Show" prices during the shows, but through negotiating they have the profit margin to give those prices any day of the week. My opinion anyways.

What exactly are you upset about? You asked for a price (quote) and they gave you one. It doesn't mean that you have to agree with their quote. You now can turn around and let them know that under no circumstances are you paying that much. Give them a counter offer and see what they say. Worst they can do is say no. The biggest advice I can give someone in a negotiating situation is to leave your emotions out of the equation. That will only complicate matters and hurt your bottom line in the end. Be honest with what you are willing to pay and if they don't want your money, someone else will take it. Make sure you are fair to the dealer as well (they have to make a few dollars) and an agreement should be reached.

Thanks, do you think that $2,000 above RVW price would be fair ???

I see you have pretty much the same trailer as what I'm looking for (almost exact if you have the outside kitchen). How do you like it ? Anything I should be on the lookout for ?

I obtained a quote from RVW for a 8289WS with options. I then went to the Rockwood dealer about 20 miles from my home and requested a quote on the same RV (Factory Order). I did not, and would never, reveal the RVW quote.

The dealer came in at $3500 above RVW delivered to the dealership, and I consider that a match, with the convenience of local service for a product they sold to me. Transportation from RVW would have been $3000.

The only negotiations was on my trade in, which is a 2009 Weekend Warrior Toy Hauler with every bell and whistle available. That took several back and forth phone calls before we reached middle ground.

I know that dealers are in the business to make money, and they need to make money to stay in business, but any dealer that is way out of line in their initial pricing would not be one that I would consider.

If you already know you can save $10,000 by going to RV Wholesalers why not do just that. You can probably have it delivered for $1,500 which still leaves you with $8,500. Yes you can go into the local dealer and flash the price from RVW and see if they will meet it but ultimately you have to be willing to take your business elsewhere if they don’t blink. If you aren’t really willing to go elsewhere (RV Wholesalers or others) the local dealer can smell that and wont budge.

I shopped around local dealers for my camper. They talked price with me and no one could touch RVW’s prices. I gave them the…ok…so is this the BEST you can do? You can make a sale with me because I am REALLY going to buy and soon! None of them bit. So…off to RVW I went. Mine gets delivered a week from today!
RVW has been great to deal with btw. Don’t let the fact of them being so far away scare you away from purchasing from them.

Just a note if you purchase through RV Wholesalers. No matter where you live today, tomorrow or next year you always get local service if you purchase through RV Wholesalers. When service is needed you call them and they find someone to do the service and tell you when and where to be. This also comes in handy if you are on the road as you just call them up and they will find service where you are at or somewhere on the path to where you are going. People having had difficulty with this do so because they call looking for a dealer rather than calling RVW. In any event…I hope your purchase goes well. Oh..and no reason to be P/O’d. Its only $$ right?!?! J

RV Wholesalers deliver is only $807. So not big deal.

I just would like to support a local dealer is possible. But $19,500 vs $29,000 is not even in the ball park.

I really like the trailer. I was drooling over the outside kitchen but the DW wouldn't let me spend the extra money on it. I kind of understand since I bbq most of the time and always bring my smoker with me so the only benefit would have been the fridge. Anyway, I have had no real issues with the trailer and love it every time we are in it. Just as a reference for your price, I was under 19k out the door and was happy with that deal (local dealer, no trade).

I think if your dw would see how useful and convenient it is or would have been she would have changed her mind.
Outside kitchen is WAY worth the extra money spent IMO .
Less trafic inside camper when the a/c is on.
Less opening of the inside fridge which is hard enough to keep cool.

The convenience of not making 18 trips into camper during meal time is great !

[QUOTE=bean;325373]I asked my closest dealer (which is over an hour away) for a quote on an in-stock Puma travel trailer (30QDB).

Take a breath and read your quote again and what you wrote. They gave you quite a big discount.......it is in the form of your trade in. If you are saying the NADA retail value of your trade is $7700 that means the Trade In Value is probably $5500 or close to that. It seems to me that they gave you a $4,500 discount. Trust me.....RV wholesalers will not be $10,000 less since they don't want your trade.
95% of people that have a trade feel it is worth more that what it really is. Many RV dealers and Car dealers show high trade amounts in order to overcome that objection in the negotiation process. Right now they gave you a quote. They just left one objection for them to overcome in order to put the deal together........the only objection at this point is the price of the new unit or the Out the Door final figure.
The dealer is not a mind reader and EVERY customer is different. Some customers buy based on what they feel is a good deal on the price of the new unit and others of the trade value......believe it or not.......some people will buy and it has nothing to do with money. They make their decision based on how they felt during the sales pitch and product demonstration. They "buy" the salesperson and or the dealership and see the "good deal" based on the experience.
Since the dealership/salesperson does not know which person you are or what "hot button" will make you say yes to the deal......they did the best option that will satisfy 80% of customers and offend very few.

If they wanted to offend you or try to rip you off.....they would have quoted you MSRP and a low low Trade In Value. Only then would you really have the right to be screaming mad.

It's a process. Dealers will always start out high to see what they can get away with. Some are willing to only come down so far (as ependy said). I for one enjoy the "haggling". With our purchase we went back and forth 4 or 5 times before we reached an agreement on price. Which by the way was my starting offer.

As also mentioned ... make sure you establish an out the door price. A lot of dealers add on for PDI, prep and delivery to name a few. Any reputable dealer will not charge these add-ons. In my case we had 5er price + Tax + Lic...nothing else. caveat is that shipping was included in the price and some dealers kept that as separate.

I also have to state that picking the right dealer is as important, if not more important, than Make/Model is. Do please do as much homework on the dealer as you do the trailer you select.

I wish you the best of luck in finding your perfect trailer at the perfect price!
