DIRECTV taking away East and West coast channels

We have been full timers for 13 years, still traveling extensively. So much to see and do! What a fabulous country we live in! Since I love to watch TV late at night (night owl here) access to the local stations of Los Angeles and New York was a necessity for recording favorite programs. Now DRECTV is cancelling this privilege because of Congress blah blah blah (read $$$). Has anybody else been affected by this decision and what is your solution to this problem?

74 views and no replies! Argh! DIRECTV said something to the effect of Tough S#&t but gave me a number to call because we are RVers which turned out to be Winguard, the maker of our antenna - a dome. That lady was very pleasant but pointed out that they are equipment people not satellite tv providers. She did mention that they had recommended the East/West coast option to many people. None of these own a Forest River product? Apparently one could change ones address to get those local channels. We tried that once and it was a huge hassle resulting in a change of billing address which is unacceptable. Help!!

Are you (OP) saying you could get local channels for both coasts at the same time? A special kind of package that they are doing away with?
Or are you saying Direct won't let you change locals at all anymore?
Not having Direct, I'm not understanding the exact problem you are addressing.
Everyone in my RV circle has left Direct and gone to Dish. We all easily change our locals to wherever we are at the time.

I’ve had DIRECTV several years. I have called and changed my SERVICE address but never my BILLING address. Regarding east and west stuff, I have no idea since I usually travel in the middle.

Special package. Our normal local channels are the Atlanta channels. The coasts we paid for. I think we were the last people to get both coasts, they were most reluctant to give us the West coast. Often I record and/ or watch more than two programs at a time hence both coast for the time lag.

Since AT&T acquired DirectTV they are trying to get everyone to switch to AT&T TV NOW. My take is they want to drop the satellite service and go with cellular service.

Thanks for the info. In order to be prepared before tackling unfriendly, unhelpful people at DIRECTV how much lead time is required for service address change? Often we just stay one night before moving on to more interesting places. We usually only travel no more than 200 mi using mostly non-interstate roads. More to see.

Their reps have changed my service address while I waited although I haven’t requested it in a good while. We have one particular 230 mile trip where a change is not necessary. A 260 mile trip in a different direction requires a change IFF we care. Usually, we don’t care. We probably wouldn’t care for only 1-3 days.

Since the loss of the Distant Networks is really happening next month (June 2020), I would like ideas on how to get the networks without getting hard to change locals, buying a new HD dish for the RV at $600, and a new receiver. The first person that tells me to camp near a big city will be unfriended.

So....We had Directv for several years, we got it for our house and got another receiver for our trailer in northern NH. I told the rep at Directv what we were doing and they were ok with it, I bought another dish, and after many attempts got it to receive all the channels that we had at home. Fast forward to ATT buying Directv and all that changed. Customer service was terrible, so to make a long story short, I cancelled and got Dish for the trailer and have been very happy.
That my 2 cents worth.

When I got my Berkshire I called Directv and told them that I needed an additional DVR for my house in Florida. When the tech showed up I showed him the rig and told him that it was the house it was going into. He was very good and hooked everything up for me and had it running. We left for Oklahoma and on the way was notified that we could not have the RV on the same account as the house in Florida due to Congress changing the law, blah, blah, blah. So when we got to Oklahoma I called and they sent me to the RV department, who turned out to be a third party company. They gave me a sob story and said they were sending a tech out to fix me up with a separate account. When he arrived he said that it was a new install, therefore he could not use the dish that was on the roof, he would have to add a new dish and run new wires through the coach. I told him like hell he was and sent him packing. I unhooked the cable from the DVR and reattached it and voala, we have had the same service that we have full time in Florida. AT&T has been in talks with DISH network to buy them out for over a year now. Hopefully this will happen soon and we can get some adult supervision once again.

I think you have posted a conundrum with respect to DirecTV...

Twincamper gave you a possible solution to your problem.

I have Dish Network. Local channels are from the area you happen to be in. Either call or chat with them to change your service address. Their app lets you do the same thing. Change is practically instant. Change as often as you need to. No fee.

My DIRECTV HD antenna cost $59.97. I DO have to point it which I can do in less than 15 minutes.

Is that a tripod dish or a portable dish? I use a portable. Enter the zip code and its done.

I see you edited the post to which I referred. Mine is a portable HD antenna which could be mounted on a tripod but I fabricated a stand. Click image for larger version

Excellent idea! Wish I had thought about something like that years ago!

I just switched to Dish after 19 years with their "rv' package. Just did this today and have not yet received the new equipment. My only concern is how easy it is to "switch" locations. nightly, when at a new rv park?
