I've been there before, though not the exact same issue. Thanks for pointing out your error, which will hopefully help others to not make the same mistake.

I about ripped the umbilical cord out of our camper yesterday, trying to move it to allow a gravel delivery... just barely caught the cord tightening out of the corner of my mirror, and stopped in time before I ruined anything.

Point is, we all get in a "hurry" or complacent at times, and it often takes a close call before we never make that mistake again.

My WDH (as probably most do) requires me to use the tongue of the trailer to lift the back of my truck in order to connect the torsion bars. I would hope that I would quickly discover my ball isn't seated during this process.

Is that the one with the clam-shell and spring loaded collar?

Do those collars ever fail? Can the collars be rebuilt?

Almost did this with the boat trailer once , but I always double check all the connections before driving away and noticed it. You just can never be to careful!

Yes it is

They are practically indestructible, so I dont know if they can be rebuilt.
Never had a failure over 20 years of use , but you need to lubricate them once in a while.
I used to own a landscaping business and my crews were very rough with them. Backing in to them , etc . Messed up a few truck bumpers , but only scratched the hitch.
