Favorite State Parks?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all of the kind comments about my family's new camping blog. I just wrote a review of our stay at Camden Hills State Park in Maine at Lively Little Campers and was wondering what some of your favorite state parks are?

I am looking for some recommendations for future outings. We loved Camden Hills and it was so much cheaper than staying at a private campground. About 40 bucks a night.

Would love some state park recommendations from anywhere in the country!

Absolutely. We do plan on taking the camper cross-country one day soon.

Elk Neck State Park in MD is a great park with 3 point hook up and less that $40 a night . It's along the Bay and the views from Turkey point Light house a beautiful.We are heading back in September. Make reservations early and they also have large and small cabins to rent. Lots to do in the area.

Great thread! We are in Indiana and have only been out once. Looking forward to learning of other nice state parks (and visiting a few).

Hunting Island State Park is great but unless you are going midwinter better make you're reservations well in advance. We love it. FD Roosevelt State Park north of Columbus GA is another of our favorites, just outside of Callaway Gardens. Stephen Foster CC State Park in White Springs FL is on our A list as well......

i see you are from new jersey. we are in MA. would like to stay in maine maybe next year. so im going to heck out the review you gave. we have been going around.. but we really like brialee, in ashford ct. and the plus is.. every spot regardless of hookups- during mid-week ( sund- thurs) is just 20$. and they dont charge for extra kids!! love it , we are going there again tomorrow and probably for halloween. they have great family activities, and its just really comfortable there!

I'm in Indiana as well. I would recommend Brown County and Turkey Run. Brown County has a lot of hills and great views. Several hiking trails and a couple of lakes too. Turkey Run has a creek running through it that you can canoe on. There are also several hiking trails through some beautiful canyons. The great thing is that most Indiana parks are under $20 during the week for water and electric!

if you fish, surf, sebastain inlet state park ,sebastain fl, we live close enough for weekend trips taking the boat also, we also like table rock state park and devils fork state park in pickens so.carolina

Turkey Run fills up quick doesn't it?

If you get out west (really west), there's a gorgeous State park, actually run by the COE, called Charbonneau State Park in Eastern Washington, between Richland and Walla Walla.

Beautiful setting on one of the lakes formed by the Columbia/Snake River hydro scheme. The sites are very spacious, many pull-thrus. The climate in September, when we usually go, is dry, sunny and fairly mild (highs around 80F and humidity in the 20's).

I realise it's a long way from home for you, but it's definitely worth a stop-over if you get out this way. For us, it's a two day trip eastwards.

We recently stayed at Pine Grove Furnace in PA.

They only have electric at the sites, but water is available at various places (not at every site) and they have a dump station.

It is full of tress and very peaceful. The bathhouse was the best of any place we have seen. Big and clean. You do have to keep pushing a button for shower water about every 15 seconds.

P.S. Most people could not get cell service (or very weak). So be warned.

All of the State parks in VA are great! Clean, not too crowded, most with water and electric hook-ups (Kiptopeke in Eastern Shore has full hook-ups) and shade. We particularly like First Landing in VA Beach, Lake Anna close to Northern VA, and Douthat in the Allegheny Mountains. The price per night varies between $22 and $30 and most are open from March 1 - Dec. 1. There is very good web site, State Park Index and reservations are made through Reserve America.

Oklahoma has some SP's that are nice.
We just attened a FROG rally at Natural Falls SP. Located near West Siloam Springs, OK.
Very clean park. Friendly staff. Great payground and hiking trails. Meeting room with AC. No swimming area or pool. 27 tent sites and 44 RV sites which 9 are FHU and 10 are 50 amp W/E. The rest are 30 amp W/E. $20-$23




Another SP we camp at is Lake Eufaula SP. Located near Eufaula, OK.
Clean park. Large sites. Paved roads and pads are level. 2 areas both with playgrounds and pavilions. Located on Lake Eufaula so access to fishing, swimming and boating.
One area is W/E only with 30 and 50 amp. Nature Center and hiking trails. Boat ramp & boat docks. Marina with fishing dock and small cafe that serves breakfast and lunch.
The second area is FHU, 30 amp only, with some pull thru sites but is 3 or 4 miles from lake access. $21-$23
Primitive camping sites. $12

In NYS, it's a toss-up (for me) between Wellselly Island State Park and Letchworth State Park.

In Maryland, by FAR our favorite is Assateague Island State Park.

Haven't stayed in many PA State Parks, but Pinchot State Park, in the York. PA area was nice.

Fort Clinch in Fernandina Beach, Florida is great if you can get in! Very popular place, nice old fort to explore, fishing pier for those of you who love to fish, and the beach is right here, as well. Well shaded river campsites, or open area beach campsites are available.
