Wife ran over alligator skin recently with BMW (very low slung) smacked her protective pans underneath causing "baseball card flapping noise" under braking. I could see those exposed propane lines under my Flagstaff 206ST getting whacked and busted which would only be a fire hazard if the propane was open like running the fridge (which I don't).

Am I right that the tire skins are usually retreads or is that no longer the case. If they're retreads in most cases they should be banned. In 1200 miles of driving we saw thousands of skins all with the potential to damage vehicles.

was a water hammer causing sparks from not priming hose, which ignited a box of nitro gloves which started a fire because you did not turn off propane at last gas station

Fire Guess

Ok, my WAG Bad rear wheel bearing, over heated grease. Grease fire leaking out of hub, now tire fire, then coach fire and on and on it goes.

What ever started it, hope no one hurt.

Tire and engine compartment problems are FAR more likely culprits.

The good news is, I heard the owner tried to use his gray water to hose the fire down but Good Samaritans stopped him from sprinkling that precious dirty water on the ground.

The noise police came around and complained about the road noise because the campsite was so close to the highway.

And lastly, the light police were out in full force over the brightness of the flames. Good thing the owner didn't get out his bucket light.

And second lastly, thank god there wasn't a contractor generator in sight.

Doug, it's going to be a couple of minutes before I stop chuckling...

On a serious note, I've heard the most common cause of RV fires is the absorption fridge. I picked up a Proteng suppression tube for my trailer. I picked it up at the International Rally from a vendor who was dropping the line, sold it at his cost. It looks like a PEX tube with fittings on each end and is filled with a liquid fire suppressant liquid. If a fire starts, the tube is compromised and the liquid escapes putting out the fire.

Proteng has multiple sizes, some large enough to handle a diesel pusher engine compartment.
As with any kind of insurance, it's a waste of money, unless you need it.

What?

Calling a single RV fire a “holocaust” has to be the biggest misnomer I’ve seen in a long time.

Many many years ago at a local CG wife and I were walking with the kids thru CG and came upon family that just parked their popup. Dad opens the little door and SMOKE comes pouring out of the trailer. He grabs the crank and before I can yell at him...NO !!! He starts raising the roof. That's all it needed was a little more oxygen. WOOOSH !!! Flame everywhere. He tried with the little extinguisher, but no way...it was fully engulfed. No cell phones back then, but a bystander seeing the flames drove up to office to call FD. Small town and only Volunteer FD, so it took a little bit for them to get there. As the FD was setting up to hose it down, to add insult to injury, the pop off valve on the propane tank let loose and turned into a giant blow torch right at the front of the camper. It didn't take but a minute for it to burn a hole right thru the front of the camper, destroying what little was left of it. Probably 10 minutes and it was all over and the popup completely burnt out. The cause was ruled at faulty wiring that was added by the owner and shorted out due to shabby work.

We had friends whose brand new motorhome went up in flames just a few miles from their house. Fire started in the toad and spread to the MH. Unless you were there when it started, you will not know.

For one do we know if it was a diesel pusher or a gas. I can tell you what happened to my moms motor home when it caught fire and how it happened. Being that I was an accident investigator I came up with the cause.

I had topped off the gas motor home prior to taking a short trip to the camp ground. The coach had recently been in for repairs at the Winnebago plant in Forest City IA for a fuel tank issue. The way the fuel tank and filler tube are connected is via a rubber hose connection held there with radiator clamps. While drive the fuel expanded and got up to the rubber connection and started leaking onto the tail pipe of the MH. The clamps had not been properly tighten so what happens when fuel hits hot tail pipe. Temp that day was 100 degrees.

I wonder is diesel pushers have somthing simular for connecting fuel tank. Later RJD

We'd probably be surprised if we knew the total number of vehicle fires that occur throughout the year. A few weeks ago, I was on a trip from Vancouver, BC up to Clearwater, about 75 miles north of Kamloops -- up the 'Coke' (Hwy 5) and back the Hope/Princeton (Hwy 3...). We counted five sites where a vehicle had pulled over and burned hot enough to bubble the pavement. All five were this year, judging from the scorching of the nearby grass and/or fires heading off into the bush.

Mass scale would however be the thousands of truck tire debris cluttering our highways and that's just on one 1200 mile trip. Nobody has weighed in on why trucks are shedding their tires on such a massive scale - RECAPS???

If it was your RV burning to the ground, you might think differently. [emoji23]

I kinda held back on weighing in on this subject but if you insist... First, they are called road gators not alligators. In you op I thought your wife ran over the actual animal..lol.

Secondly, I don’t know what roads you drive but you said thousands in a 1 thousand two hundred mile journey which meant you saw a road gator on avg every mile.

I just returned from a 10,000 mile trip and don’t think I saw anywhere near 20. I use Waze and report them and did not do much reporting.

How did you stay in one lane? Must have been doing a out of lane switching. Use Waze, at least you will know one is coming ahead.

Yea they’re recaps for sure. I’m sure the trucking industry has a big lobby. 12 tires times new vs 12 tires vs recap equals big costs to truckers and then passed on to us in increased transportation costs...
