Firewood, What do you Bring or use

Just wondering what everyone does about firewood? I know some CG want you to buy theirs at an outrageous price but do you bring your own?

Many states prohibit bringing in firewood from out of state due to destructive bugs in wood.

I used to take wood anywhere. Now my area is in a quarantine for another Chinese imported bug. So I'm going to break down and start buying it near the campgrounds, or from them. It's not something that makes me happy but I'm going to play by the rules.

We would buy it where we burn it, I see no point in carrying the extra weight.

With the quarantined area even buying locally can be unsafe for the campgrounds trees. Some of the local sellers of wood get their wood from other areas that may be infected. I either buy from the campground or purchase wood that has been kiln dried which kills all the invasive bugs.

Here in NY you're not supposed to transport firewood more than 50 miles to prevent spread of the Emerald Ash Borer. That said, I buy my wood when I'm close to the destination. Try not to buy firewood wrapped in plastic unless it's kiln dried. The plastic tends to trap moisture and prevent wet wood from drying. At one campground I couldn't keep the fire burning with a propane torch!

We get small pine skids in at work all the time. So I take them home by the truckload and break them down and de nail them. Easy to pack plenty for the weekend and not take up much space in the truck bed.

Bought some wood at a campground last year and the stuff had just been cut and would not burn. Makes for a frustrating hour and a half trying.

We use a propane campfire stove. Gives you heat no wood to transport and can be used when there is a fire ban.

Maryland prohibits moving firewood to prevent the spread of Emerald Ash Borer. Most state parks sell wood recovered from normal tree maintenance in the park or nearby state forests. If you have ever seen the impact of EAB infestation you would understand the reasoning.

We use the Outland 18" Portable Propane Fire Bowl Premium. Instant fire. Click on, click off. Never have to worry about wood.

I think I am going to look into one of those propane campfire pits, burning wood gets old after a while and expensive, also a pain to carry...

Good idea to those burning Propane pits 😄

I'm sure most people, like myself, would have no problem buying wood from the camp store if it was't priced so ridiculously high. You shouldn't be able to carry $30 worth in your arms when you can buy a whole cord for $150. Pure robbery.

Yeah if they made it more reasonable ppl would not sneak wood it, to me they should give you like 20 pieces for $5-$7 not 5 pieces for $7.00

Same here. We bring home scrap pine wood from the leftover cuts at work. Makes for nice, clean firewood. Usually we load up 2 round metal tubs ( 1 burn per night ), and stash them in the back of the truck. Makes excellent campfires. Best of all, we never have to buy wood.

If we go state park/forest we usually don't bring outside wood in. I pack a chainsaw and cut some local wood that is already down and dry.
I say usually because I have a good supply of oak from my own yard.

Two neighbors are contractors. I have a great supply of 2x4, 2x6, 2x10 plus some 4x4 and 4x6 at times. I take enough for a burn of about 90 minute sand keep it low.

We do the same, I pack a small chainsaw and we cut deadfall. Most NF or state campgrounds are ok with removing the fire hazard as long as you aren't being a nuisance with the noise. We usually drive 10-15 minutes up a logging road / jeep trail away from the campground.

We do have the Big red campfire now so I'm anxious to try it out and see how much heat it puts out.

Here is another interesting option. Clean, safe won't smoke out neighbors.
