First Aid Kit

Hey everyone. I am looking to get a very well equipped first aid kit for the camper. Anyone have any ideas or comments. I used to be a Paramedic, so the kit can contain lots of goodies.

Having pre-hospital first aid training as a Paramedic is a wonderfull asset. I have been a Paramedic for the last 34 years and still active in the field. But I would advise to keep your first aid bag pretty basic. Bandages, Scissors, Aspirin or ibuprophen, maybe a insect bite stick, just over the counter stuff. Having to many goodies (especially advanced goodies, if you can get them) could land you in hot water and in court.

Got a kit 30 years ago in a neat case. Have had to replace a lot of it over the years due to expiring. Have only used the scissors and bandaids and insect bite items. Don't waste your money on gauze, patches, tape, and alot of other stuff that comes in a kit. Nine times out of ten it won't get used.

Whenever I resupply my camping first aid kit, I consider what injuries we have had while actually camping. All pretty minor. Burns from fire and sunburn. Cuts, scrapes and bruises. Insect bites and bee stings. These are the big three for us so I pack for that. I broke a finger once while on a trip so something to use as a splint is good, too. Otherwise, I'd agree with the posts that say to keep it simple.

Don't forget a good set of tweezers. I had to pull a splinter out of the DW's finger last trip. Fingernail clippers and file to clean up that finger nail that got torn or broken. Neosporin First Aid Antiseptic/Pain Relieving product for the kids cuts and scrapes.

I've been an EMT since 1980 (still can't figure out why I yet again recertified last year), and I've never seen a commercial, pre-packaged kit that I really liked. What I've done for the truck is to get a medium size fishing tackle box, and stock it with the basics. The commercial kits seem to have some stuff that I'll never use, and not enough of the supplies that I would expect to use.

Fire Instructor, please share your expertise and give us a list like Herk so we can pick & choose from them both. I would imagine they are both pretty similar and it is always good to get info from all knowledgeable sources. Especially for us "Poor dumb civilians" with no training.

On my last outing I was at a McD's using the free Internet drinking my beloved soda when something on their TV got my attention. The lady said to apply Elmore type glue to the area of the splinter and allow to dry. Then peel the glue off and the splinter will come with it.

Sorry but I didn't have a splinter to put this method to the test.

There is one item that has not been mentioned yet; it is a tick remover.
Anyone who has ever removed a tick using tweezers knows how hard this is to accomplish while still keeping the tick intact (ie. head still on), it is a real PITA. I forget the brand name of the one I have, but it looks like a miniature hammer claw. One brand that showed up google is 'Ticked Off' ---> TICKED OFF™ the world’s simplest tick remover
