Forest River says this is a maintenance item

We used our 2017 Cardinal 5er about 5 or 6 times has about 5000 miles on it,

Out of warranty

On our way home last time from visiting our daughter in Flagstaff my DW said that doesn't sound good (pulling out of the fuel stop) she heard something scratching she said. I got out and looked couldn't see anything.

Made it home, the next day I looked at stuff and noticed a bubble on one of our tires, took it off and notice on the other side the rotor looked bad. Here is what was scratching. The retainer fell off the brake caliper holding on the pads.

Got in contact with Forest River and they said that is a maintenance item.

Taking it apart I found some more "MAINTENANCE ITEMS"

Checked with Dexter sent them info and photos, there going to get back with me.

Did you remove the retainer pin and plate in photo #1?
It appears it was there at some point by the marks on the outer pad.
You said it fell off... meaning when you removed the wheel or before somewhere along the way?

Yes that line should have been flared.

I bet Dexter will help you out. They have been very responsive to every report I've read where they were asked to get involved.

Best of luck.

Welp.... I mean "TECHNICALLY" brakes are maintenance items.

BUT that obviously shouldn't happen after 5,000 miles. Since FR buys the chassis and builds the body on top, they have nothing to do with the braking system.

Like Picker said, reach out to Dexter and see what happens. That's definitely needs a new caliper.

I think it is not to far away from the retainer, somewhere down the highway. That was the front passenger side kind of strange it to come off.

Yeah, maintenance would be to remove and replace not initially install.

Wow. That is unreal. Especially the line not flared. Is the flare by chance still in the fitting ? Certainly not the best cut on the end of that steel line to begin with ! Let us know how it goes.

Is there enough room with the wheel on for the pad to work it's way out and "fall" off?

Is that actually a retainer or just an anti-rattle clip. The pad should not be able to just slide out. It appears there was a pad there at one time. Only way I can see for the pad to be gone is to have it totally fail. I would also be replacing that caliper as it appears at least one cylinder is damaged and leaking. I would take this up with the axle /wheel assy manufacturer.

The missing pin goes through a hole in the pad (and the caliper) to retain it.
The flat plate is the anti-rattle part.

Once the pin came out, the pad worked itself out of the caliper.

To the OP... what does the inside of the wheel look like that was on that spot?
I can't imagine there is a lot of clearance there between the caliper and the wheel. There may be some damage there too.

Good luck with Dexter...

When my previous TT with barely 4000 highway miles on it (including the delivery trip to Colorado from Elkhart, Indiana) had a wheel bearing burnout and almost burned down the trailer on the interstate while passing through Phoenix, AZ...

Discovered on that trip that the trailer was riding on top of the tires and wearing holes through the floor of a slide and the trailer.

They blamed me for overloading the trailer (even though it wasn't overloaded).

After four months of fighting (and weighing full and completely empty) with them and the trailer manufacturer, I did get two upgraded replacement axles and a full set of springs (probably about $900 worth of parts), but I still had $4000 in repair bills.

And my extended warranty offered to pay $150 of the total repair bill...after I paid my $150 deductable, of course...

Traded off that TT one week after getting it fixed...

Good point, between the original bubble in one tire and flat spots on the tire in question, I took all 4 down and had new Sailun tires put on, Me or the tire guy didn't notice anything on the rim to speak of.

Dexter said the parts should go out today or tomorrow.

Looks like the "good luck with Dexter" you were hoping for!

I asked twice "can you tell me what parts are coming"

The response was it is going out today or tomorrow.

They are coming from 2 different sources.

Well I guess for now thats good enough.

That brake line is broken. There is no way the line would have remained in the fitting for as many miles you have on it. Hydraulic pressure is built every time you use the brake and the pressure would have blown it out. I would be concerned about all the tubing used on all the brakes.
