Formaldehyde concerns

All,

I am opening an old wound here but I have read with concern the comments on the internet with regards to formaldehyde gases in travel trailers by Forest River (as well as other brands). We have just bought a 2007 Flagstaff bunkhouse and were disturbed to read about formaldehyde problems at a recent RV show. I am hoping that the problem is easily addressed by properly airing out the trailer when new to get rid of any lingering gas from the glue etc in the pressboard. Since our trailer is used already, and doesn't seem to have a smell of chemicals, I am hoping this is something I should just stop worrying about. We do tend to leave our windows open often so we do have a well ventilated trailer all season. I love camping and was disappointed to hear that anything should dampen my spirits now that we have upgraded to our new 2007 unit!

Any comments?

We are in Amherstburg Ontario (close to Windsor) down in most Southern part of Ontario. One of these days we'll make it out to your neck of the woods on a trip. This is our third year in the RV world. We have mostly travelled in the US so far.

The only time I really noticed the formaldehyde smell in ours is after it has been closed up in hot weather. Opening the trailer up and airing it out for a while clears it in a few minutes. As the trailer ages, the smell will go away. Our Flagstaff wasn't any worse than previous trailers we have owned.

Oh, and by the way, to the Forest River Forums.

Ours smelled really strong in the hot sun on the dealers lot. It faded over the first summer. I kept vents open, and fans on to ventilate it.

Our first trailer (not a Forest River) would make your eyes burn when you
entered it in storage.
We installed a MaxxAir fan and left it open all year round. (Not running,
just open).
That solved the problem.
Like you we are fresh air freaks and want the windows open as much as possible.
Same thing with our current trailer. We leave the vents open all the time
and have windows open most of the time we are using the trailer.
Even in cold weather we try to have one window open a small amount to cut down
on condensation.

Happy Camping!!

Our Georgetown was pretty strong when we picked it up. We drove home with every fan operating. After a few days of leaving the vents open we notice a decline in the smell. When we took our unit back to the dealer about 45 days after we picked it up there was no sign of any smell. We leave our fan vents open year round when we aren't using the motorhome.

We picked up our 2008 Rockwood 5th wheel 21 days after it left the Factory. Spent a week slowly bringing it home.

It just smelled new to us! Never a problem, and Sweet Wife sometimes has a bout with athesma so she would probably have been sensitive to any kind of residual fumes. Again, no problems with any kind of out gassing.

Wow thanks for all of the quick insights on the formaldehyde. I am not concerned anymore....will just use lots of fresh air to keep the trailer well vented. What a great forum!
