frig question

last year our firg stayed at a constant 35 degrees so when i started it this year i did not touch the slide that raises or lowers the temp. this year it according to the thermometer is right at 40 degrees. so i slid it up to lower the temp. it stayed at 40 lowered it it stayed at 40 do you think the sensor is not working ?
or may be the thermometer is not working the freezer is keeping the ice well frozen the frig. is only 2 years old. and and was from april till late october with out a problem, we did have to defrost it once.
